RESIDENTS campaigning for the removal of a mobile phone mast in Waltham Abbey will have to wait until the autumn for a final decision. Epping Forest Council’s negotiations with telecommunications giant O2 to move the mast at the junction of Stonyshotts and Honey Lane have stalled since a meeting in February. Council leader Cllr Di Collins (Con, Passingford) told council chiefs at a meeting of the cabinet on Monday last week that she had been frustrated in her attempts to speak with the managing director on the phone. She said: "He is not contactable by phone, it is somewhat difficult without a number to use. He obviously keeps incognito – I have no idea for what reason." Written enquiries have also met with no response. Cllr Syd Stavrou (Con, Waltham Abbey High Beach), who has been heavily involved with the long-running saga, said: "Our residents have been pushing for a conclusion. "I understand the difficulties of getting into communication with the communications company because it has been extremely difficult for our planning department to do so." The issue dates back to 2006, when O2 gained automatic permission to erect the mast after the council failed to respond to the application in time. The council was poised to settle for paying £250 compensation to the 10 residents who objected to the mast at the time on top of a £250 ‘goodwill gesture’ already paid. However, the 100 neighbours who subsequently signed a petition against the mast will receive nothing. However, a last-minute option for negotiating moving the mast to the nearby Marriott hotel in Old Shire Lane emerged earlier this year when it was discovered that O2 have a national agreement with the chain. The matter was deferred until the next meeting of the cabinet, due to take place in September. |
