Sony to slash smartphone workforce 50% by 2020
Japan Created: 30 Mar 2019
TOKYO -- Sony is cutting up to half its smartphone workforce as sales shrink in the face of stiff global competition.

The job cuts come as the global smartphone industry suffers one of the severest downturns of recent years. Worldwide shipments are expected to decline for the third straight year in 2019 to about 1.3 billion units, according to U.S. research company IDC.

Sony's share of the smartphone market has fallen sharply in recent years -- from more than 3% in 2010, according to the research portal Statistica -- to less than 1% currently. It has struggled to compete against leaders Apple, Samsung Electronics and Huawei Technologies, all of which are racing to develop new 5G devices.

The decision to scale back its smartphone workforce, which could see up to 2,000 of the total 4,000 jobs cut by March 2020, is part of a move to reduce fixed costs in the business, and also includes procurement reform.

Some of the Japanese employees affected by the decision will be transferred to other divisions, but the company will offer voluntary retirement in its Europe and China operations.

Sony will limit smartphone sales in Southeast Asia and other areas to focus on Europe and East Asia.

The company's smartphone sales for fiscal 2018 are projected to come in at a dismal 6.5 million units, half the previous year's figure and just one-sixth that of five years ago.

In fiscal 2014, Sony pulled 1,000 employees from its smartphone operations, but sales have plunged faster than expected, necessitating a further round of cuts.

Sony's smartphone business generates annual revenue of about 500 billion yen, but is expected to post an operating loss for the third straight year through fiscal 2019. By halving operating expenses from fiscal 2017, the company hopes the business will turn a profit by fiscal 2020.

Sony has restructured before, selling off its personal computer unit and paring costs at its TV business. Now, its smartphone business remains the only loss-making unit.

Controlling wireless devices
Japan Created: 25 Jan 2018
Technology is increasingly present in our lives - Part of that spread reflects the embedding of technology in daily life, whether it’s integrating digital circuitry into once “dumb” objects or our reliance on communications devices. There is, however, another more disturbing reason for that presence: addiction. Research shows that technology — and the cellphone in particular — has an increasingly powerful pull and exhibits increasingly worrisome effects on human behavior.

This concern is not new. Researchers have for years warned of the troubling side effects of technology: sleeplessness, depression, shortened attention spans and antisocial behavior. This problem has assumed new attention after two major investors in Apple — New York-based Jana Partners LLC and the California State Teachers’ Retirement System (CalSTRS), which together control $2 billion of Apple stock — released an open letter calling on the firm to do more to fight technology addiction. The letter cited the “developing consensus around the world … that the potential long-term consequences of new technologies need to be factored in at the outset, and no company can outsource that responsibility to an app designer. …”

Apple replied that it cares deeply “about how our products are used and the impact they have on users and the people around them.” It should and it must, as should other hardware designers and app developers.

The addiction problem stems from two powerful forces, one physiological and one sociological. Researchers have recognized that “good” software design triggers the production of dopamine in the brain. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that is responsible for carrying messages involved in reward-motivated behavior. “Good” design creates anticipation of a reward.

As Tristan Harris, a former product manager at Google, has explained, certain apps “trigger (a)whole set of sensations and thoughts.” The manipulation can even be as simple as using certain colors and fonts to stimulate engagement. Red and bright blue subconsciously encourage users to reach for phones. Justin Rosenstein, a former Facebook executive calls the “likes” function “bright dings of pseudo-pleasure” — a revealing sentiment from the man credited with creating the Like button.

The ability to manipulate human physiology is encouraged by a different form of “dopamine”: capitalism. One investor with significant holdings in coffee retailers, casinos and alcohol manufacturers was blunt: “We invest in things that are addictive,” adding that “addictive things are very profitable.” The result is increasingly disturbing behavior. High internet use adversely affects frontal lobe and brainstem functions, and delays cognitive development. Young students who are heavy users of social media have a 27 percent higher risk of depression, while the spread of smartphones has been linked to a 22 percent jump in the number of teens in the United States who reported sleeping less than seven hours; sleep deprivation is linked to poor performance at school, obesity, and depression and anxiety.

One sign of mounting concern is the World Health Organization’s decision to classify video game addiction as an official mental health condition. The WHO has concluded that gaming disorders are “characterized by a pattern of persistent or recurrent gaming behavior,” including “not feeling like you have control over how much you play.” This behavior “is of sufficient severity to result in significant impairment in personal, family, social, educational, occupational or other important areas of functioning.”

Japan, along with countries like Australia, China, Italy and South Korea, officially recognizes tech addiction as a disorder. According to one survey, high school girls in Japan spend an average of seven hours a day on their mobile phones; nearly 10 percent spend at least 15 hours. Boys of the same age average just over four hours of mobile phone use daily. A 2013 government survey showed that 60 percent of Japanese high school students showed strong signs of digital addiction, with as many as 8.1 percent of junior high and high school students suffering from internet addiction and its associated problems.

Fortunately, there are cures. One of the “easiest” is a “fasting camp” where children are forced into technology-free environments. Research shows that taking away devices has helped children develop empathy.

Such remedies treat the symptoms, not the disease, and that is why companies like Apple must step up their efforts to minimize the damage from technology. The investor letter urged Apple to set up an expert committee with child development specialists and others, and then ensure its work is widely disseminated. Another option is giving parents more control over their children’s devices through adjustments to operating systems and apps. These are tentative first steps. But as in all addictions, the most important step is recognizing there is a problem. Without that, there can be no solution.

Japanese govt lures tourists with free Wi-Fi in exchange for ID
Japan Created: 9 Jun 2014
Finding free wireless access in Japan has been quite a challenge for tourists - But the government is planning to change it, offering free Wi-Fi to anyone who registers their passport upon arriving in one of the country’s airports.

In high-tech and generally customer-friendly Japan, even in its most visited, major cities finding a free Wi-Fi hotspot in public areas for your mobile device is difficult. And the paid wireless services in the land of the rising sun are generally expensive.

While Japanese residents are not affected by the situation, as they mainly use mobile broadband for Internet access, travellers have long complained regarding the difficulties it brings.

As part of an effort to attract more tourists to the technologically advanced country, the Japanese government has come up with a special program, designed to provide foreign visitors with free public Wi-Fi. To get access to it, tourists only need to present their passports upon arrival to a Japanese airport.

After registering, visitors are provided with a card that offers free Wi-Fi coverage via 45,000 hot spots in the eastern Japan area including Tokyo, Mt. Fuji, Nagano, Hokkaido and Fukushima. However, the free access is useful for short-term visitors only, as it lasts just for 14 days, or 336 hours.

The initiative by the Japanese government also partly aims at pushing more buildings in Japan to offer Wi-Fi access.

The government expects the system to be fully available in 2016. The trial program was launched earlier this year, and is expected to last until September.

The Shiota family are requesting keep a free zone area around their house to NTTdocomo head office. They had been walking from Nagano prefecture to NTTdocomo (Tokyo). The distance is about 215km.The last day of their walk, many EHS and MCS people walked with them to NTT docomo. Please see the film with English subtitles in You Tube. A house of Mr.and Mrs. Shiota, and a mobile phone base station of NTT docomo.the base station was built on the mountain in 1999, then many malformed plants arose around it.EHS family began the 215Km protest walking against mobile phone company12 August, the protest walking began in Nagano. Partisipants were a director and 3 menbers of "Association to protect Environment and Health in Inadani", a menber of city council and the Shiota Family. A family with EHS will do the 215km protest walking in Next monthIn 1999, the Siota family occured EHS after built the NTT-Docomo's mobile phone base station 250m away from their house. Many symtoms, such as itch, headache, vomit, tiredness and ache of eyes were appeared. Moreover, malformed dandeliones and other flowers also aeared.(You can see detailes in Japan Focus. http://www.japanfocus.org/-Kato-Yasuko/1568 )They had move to a low EMF area, and build a new house in 2004. But, in this May, they knew NTT Docomo was planning to construction a base station in this area.In 5the July, Ms. Mieko Shiota and her daughter, Mito handed in their request that to keep a free EMF area near their house. But, NTT Docomo constructed the base station after 8 days, and began operation from 26 July. Moreover, they knew their request has not reached to the compliance board, when they confirmed..A local government also want to dissolve the area outside of communication range. So, the Shiota family can not receive any support from the local government. They will do a protest walking from their house in Nagano prefecture to NTT-Docomoin Tokyo from 12 to 23 August. The distance is about 215km. . Other EHS people and person with a pacemaker will be walking to them. Their purpose is to reach their request to the compliance board of Docomo, and to call attention to the health risk by radiation from base station. Japan Federation of Bar Association held a EMF symposiumIn April 2010, Japan Federation of Bar Association held a EMF symposium in Tokyo. Dr. Sakabe, Tokai University, gave a lecture about EHS and the effects by environmental factors. And, Dr. Sinjou, physician, expressed a health survey which was done in his appartment house that was built a mobile phone base station. It was built the 2nd generation anttenna(800MHz) in 1999, and 3rd generation antenna(2GHz) in 2009 by KDDI. Unfortunently, residents did not know health risk by mobile phone radiation. They suspected the cause was radiation from anntena , then they took refuge to oter place. Then, their symptoms improved greatly soon . Dr. Sinjou and her wife have done a survey in the appartment hous, and they knew most of residents have been suffering after the construction of antenna. They request a removal of the base station to KDDI.The base station was removed in 2009. Dr. Sinjou and his wife have done a health survey again after removed. A health problem among theresidents decreased .While the 2nd generation(800MGHz)has been operating , 49 cases such as dry eys nosebleed, and floater, were reported. After added the 3rd generation to a exiting antenna, health problem increased to 121, such as atigue, mental derangement, irritation. But, after all antenna were removed, health problems decreased to 22.This results suggest there is a seious health effect by mobile phone radiationMobile Phone Tower was removed! In April 2008, the mobile phone tower was removed in Kawanishi City.It was a tower of NTT Docomo, a huge mobile phone company in Japan. The frequencies were 877.5MHz and 2132.6-2147.4MHz, and the height of tower was 20m.This land is a gentle slope. Therefore, many houses were nearly same high position to the tower antenna. Some residents concerned a health effects. But, the operator unilaterally discontinued negotiating with residents, and began a radiation from December 2005.Then, many residents complained a health problem, such as headache, sleepless and tinnitus.Residents brought a case the operator and the landowner, and demanded to stop the radiation, to cancel a lease contract, and to pay a solatium. The landowner wanted to cancel a lease of the base station. Therefore, the operator decided to stop the radiation by April 2008 and to remove it.After the stopping the radiation, health condition of residents became better. We did the health research in this area. All participants answered that their symptoms improved after the stopping. Sapporo City Subway allows to use mobile phone in a trainSapporo City Subway have been banning to use mobile phone in a vehicles. But, they will change the rule by this Spring. New rule is that turn off a mobile phone near a priority seat .Electromagnetic sensitivity people are affected a radiation of mobile phone even if mobile phone is far few meter away.

HAARP Magnetometer data shows Japan earthquake was induced.
Japan Created: 28 Mar 2011
The United States Air Force and Navy has provided a visual insight into what caused the 9.0 magnitude off of Japan on March 11, 2011 at 05:46:23 UTC. The image below was downloaded from the High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP) website. It is a time-frequency spectrogram, which shows the frequency content of signals recorded by the HAARP Induction Magnetometer.

By looking at the accompanying HAARP spectrum chart above you can see when the 9.0 magnitude earthquake struck - red line drawn vertically - and what was happening before and after the earthquake. What you can also see is a constant ULF frequency of 2.5 Hz being recorded by the magnetometer. The ULF 2.5 Hz frequency is evidence of an induced earthquake. The chart recorded this constant before, during and after the 9.0 magnitude earthquake struck. On March 11, 2011 the 2.5 Hz ULF frequency was being emitted and recorded from 0:00 hours to about 10:00 hours - or for 10 hours. We know for a fact that the Japan earthquake lasted only a few minutes so why was the earthquake signature frequency (2.5 Hz) being recorded for 10 hours on the morning of March 11, 2011? Because a HAARP phased array antenna system was broadcasting (transmitting) the 2.5Hz ULF frequency and it triggered the Japan earthquake and ensuing tsunami.

If you go to HAARP's official website you can see for yourself that the 2.5 Hz ULF frequency wasn't only being broadcated for 10 hours, it was constantly being broadcasted for 2 days prior to the earthquake.

http://presscore.ca/2011/?p=1624

...'The induction magnetometer detects temporal variation of the geomagnetic field based on Faraday's law of magnetic induction.'...

...'installed at the HAARP site is designed to detect a signal level of a few picoTesla (pT) at 1 Hz.'...

...'Magnetic field variations of interest in this program are those induced by electric currents in the ionosphere.'...

DID HAARP CAUSE THE EARTHQUAKE IN JAPAN?

A look at the induction magnetometer charts from last year's earthquake in Haiti as well as from the recent earthquake measuring 9.1 on the Richter scale that triggered a tsunami and destruction on the Japanese east coast show surprising similarities that point to an artificial cause and the use of HAARP technology.
In the case of Haiti, low frequency signals of 2,1 Hz were detected for 40 hours before the earthquake occurred while in the case of Japan something similar happened. Low frequency signals of 2,5 Hz were detected for about 55 hours before the earthquake occurred off the coast of Japan as well as for 4 hours afterwards.

Check out the time-frequency spectrograms at this link for actual dates:http://maestro.haarp.alaska.edu/cgi-bin/scmag/disp-scmag.cgi

Viewing these charts, it is reasonable to ask if the low frequency (LF) or more specifically extreme/ultra low frequency (ELF/ULF) magnetic flux induced signals of about 2 to 2,5 Hz really emanated from solar activity and other such natural sources or whether they were, in fact, caused by HAARP activities either in Gakona or Poker Flats facilities.

A steady signal lasting for so many hours at such a low frequency is highly likely not caused by natural activity in space but by some type of artificial "human-made" activity.

It is especially interesting that this signal stopped abruptly at full swing on January 11 at ~01:00 hrs UTC only to resume with full amplitude again at ~03:30 hrs UTC as if it had been switched off and on at full power!

Bernard Eastlund explored beaming High Frequency (HF) and Extremely High Frequency (EHF) waves, of extremely high power (over a billion watts), directly at a point on the ionosphere.

As a result, the ionosphere became heated from the accumulating electrical energy. You might think of it as "cooking" the atmosphere. The heated portion of the ionosphere expands like heated plastic and is lifted to a higher altitude, causing an atmospheric "bulge." Eastlund discovered that this bulge was highly reflective when it came to radio waves. Because of its altitude, it could bounce high frequency radio signals to points well beyond the horizon.

http://birdflu666.wordpress.com/2011/03/26/did-haarp-cause-the-earthquake-in-japan/

"The potential exists for generating such waves by ground-based heating of the ionosphere. The heater is used to modulate the conductivity of the lower ionosphere, which in turn modulates ionospheric currents. This modulated current, in effect, produces a virtual antenna in the ionosphere for the radiation of radio waves. The technique has already been used to generate ELF/VLF signals at a number of vertical HF heating facilities in the West and the Soviet Union. To date, however, these efforts have been confined to essentially basic research studies, and few attempts have been made to investigate ways to increase the efficiency of such ELF/VLF generation to make it attractive for communications applications. In this regard, heater generated ELF would be attractive if it could provide significantly stronger signals than those available from the Navy's existing antenna systems in Wisconsin and Michigan."

"Recent theoretical research suggests that this may be possible, provided the appropriate HF heating facility was available. Because this area of research appears especially promising, and because of existing Department of Defense requirements for ELF and VLF, it is already a primary driver of the proposed research program."

HAARP is a military project based on Eastlund’s discoveries. It is a technically difficult program to discuss with non-scientists and, as such, it has eluded the spotlight of the popular press. In addition, HAARP has been maintained partially as a clandestine project, operated by the US Navy. The information that is made available to the public is carefully worded to make HAARP appear as a bland, harmless, unclassified, atmospheric research facility.

This is TESLA technology.... remember the experiment where he started a low-frequency thrumming against the base
of a skyscraper... and within a short period of time, the building was shaking so violently it threatened to fall.
This technology was apparently applied 100km away from the fault line, on SOLID GROUND WHERE NO EARTHQUAKE COULD OCCUR NATURALLY.

Once Again, Cell Phones Linked to Tumors
Japan Created: 1 Dec 2010
The acoustic neuroma story is becoming more and more compelling.
A Japanese group is the latest --the third-- to link cell phones to this tumor of the acoustic nerve.

Read the entire story at Microwave News:
http://www.microwavenews.com/

Abstract of the Japanese study:
Results of case–control studies of mobile phone use and acoustic neuroma have been inconsistent. We conducted a case–case study of mobile phone use and acoustic neuroma using a self-administered postal questionnaire. A total of 1589 cases identified in 22 hospitals throughout Japan were invited to participate, and 787 cases (51%) actually participated. Associations between laterality of mobile phone use prior to the reference dates (1 and 5 years before diagnosis) and tumor location were analyzed. The overall risk ratio was 1.08 (95% confidence interval (CI), 0.93–1.28) for regular mobile phone use until 1 year before diagnosis and 1.14 (95% CI, 0.96–1.40) for regular mobile phone use until 5 years before diagnosis. A significantly increased risk was identified for mobile phone use for >20 min/day on average, with risk ratios of 2.74 at 1 year before diagnosis, and 3.08 at 5 years before diagnosis. Cases with ipsilateral combination of tumor location and more frequently used ear were found to have tumors with smaller diameters, suggesting an effect of detection bias. Furthermore, analysis of the distribution of left and right tumors suggested an effect of tumor-side-related recall bias for recall of mobile phone use at 5 years before diagnosis. The increased risk identified for mobile phone users with average call duration >20 min/day should be interpreted with caution, taking into account the possibilities of detection and recall biases. However, we could not conclude that the increased risk was entirely explicable by these biases, leaving open the possibility that mobile phone use increased the risk of acoustic neuroma.

20 minutes a day on cellphone enough to triple ear tumor risk
Japan Created: 17 Nov 2010
A new study from Japan reports a three-fold increased risk for acoustic neuroma in cell phone users who used cell phones for more than 20 minutes per day (the heaviest use category defined) five years before diagnosis. The risk is significant. Ipsilateral use increases the risk.

“Increased risk of acoustic neuroma was observed in cases who reported having used mobile phones on the affected ear for >20 min/day on average. Risk ratio was 2.74 (95% CI, 1.18–7.85) for use until 1 year before diagnosis and 3.08 (95% CI, 1.47–7.41) for use until 5 years before
diagnosis.

In conclusion, we found an increased risk of acoustic neuroma in the more frequently used ear for heavy mobile phone users with an average daily call duration >20 min. This increased risk should be interpreted with caution, as detection and recall biases could distort the results away from the null hypothesis. However, we could not identify any convincing evidence for biases that would entirely explain the observed increase of tumors, leaving open the possibility that mobile phone use increased the risk of acoustic neuroma. Further analysis is warranted to confirm our findings and to explore mechanisms underlying the observed association.”
