Metabolic and Genetic Screening of Electromagnetic Hypersensitive Subjects as a Feasible Tool for Diagnostics and Intervention
Russia Created: 16 May 2014
Abstract: Growing numbers of "electromagnetic hypersensitive" (EHS) people worldwide self-report severely disabling, multiorgan, non-specific symptoms when exposed to low-dose electromagnetic radiations, often associated with symptoms of multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) and/or other environmental "sensitivity-related illnesses" (SRI).

This cluster of chronic inflammatory disorders still lacks validated pathogenetic mechanism, diagnostic biomarkers, and management guidelines. We hypothesized that SRI, not being merely psychogenic, may share organic determinants of impaired detoxification of common physic-chemical stressors.

Based on our previous MCS studies, we tested a panel of 12 metabolic blood redox-related parameters and of selected drug-metabolizing-enzyme gene polymorphisms, on 153 EHS, 147 MCS, and 132 control Italians, confirming MCS altered (P < 0.05-0.0001) glutathione-(GSH), GSH-peroxidase/S-transferase, and catalase erythrocyte activities. We first described comparable-though milder-metabolic pro-oxidant/proinflammatory alterations in EHS with distinctively increased plasma coenzyme-Q10 oxidation ratio.

Severe depletion of erythrocyte membrane polyunsaturated fatty acids with increased ω 6/ ω 3 ratio was confirmed in MCS, but not in EHS.

We also identified significantly (P = 0.003) altered distribution-versus-control of the CYP2C19∗1/∗2 SNP variants in EHS, and a 9.7-fold increased risk (OR: 95% C.I. = 1.3-74.5) of developing EHS for the haplotype (null)GSTT1 + (null)GSTM1 variants.

Altogether, results on MCS and EHS strengthen our proposal to adopt this blood metabolic/genetic biomarkers' panel as suitable diagnostic tool for SRI.

Russians find electromagnetic radiation increasingly worrisome
Russia Created: 11 Mar 2014
A resident of the Moscow Region, Nikolai Lesnikov, has won a lawsuit he had filed a while ago demanding the removal of the cell phone tower that had been put up just 20 meters away from his home. Ever more Russians these days come to understand the risks the electromagnetic pollution of the environment is fraught with. However, no national program for studying and preventing this danger exists yet.

Lesnikov took the mobile phone operator MTS to court late last year. He argued that the company had abused his constitutional right to a favorable environment. In his complaint, he asked the court to oblige the defendants to remove the tower, located just 20 meters away from his country home.

The MTS’s proxy in court insisted that the radiation from all base stations fitted in with the established rules and the level of radiation was lower than that from a microwave, a neon light or from radio and television transmitters.

The court’s verdict was in the plaintiff’s favor. The MTS is obliged to dismantle the tower within four months following the moment the decision takes effect.

The federal service for supervision in the sphere of communications and information technologies (Roskomnadzor) said the other day it had exposed over 1,500 cases in which cell phone operators had violated the requirements for the parameters of radio-electronic devices. The inspection was launched in view of the quick growth in the number of radio-electronic equipment across the nation accompanying the boom in new communication and broadcasting technologies.

“Such complex signals as 4G may prove far more hazardous than the ones that have existed so far,” the daily Novyie Izvestia quotes the chairman of the Russian National Committee for Protection from Non-Ionizing Radiation, Oleg Grigoriev. He said that evaluating the safety of the G4 signal with the existing measuring methods is practically impossible. “No practical research has been conducted yet. Their safety is anyone’s guess. However, the current state of affairs as it is, an overwhelming majority of people just do not care.”

The expert believes that cell phone base stations over the past two years have fundamentally changed the electromagnetic situation in megapolises. Some scientists are beginning to consider this situation as a major environmental problem in the near future.

“Whereas 20 years ago a tiny one percent of the urban population existed in a changed electromagnetic environment, now we can say the same about 90%. The level of electromagnetic radiation has been up with the growing number of base stations.”

Russia has certain standards of the permissible levels of electromagnetic radiation stipulating that the density of the electromagnetic energy flow humans are exposed to should not exceed 10 microwatts per square centimeter. Oleg Grigoriev believes that in a modern megapolis, where humans are vulnerable to many other hazardous factors, the rate should be reduced to 2-3 microwatts per one square centimeter.

The World Health Organization has coined an official term “global electromagnetic pollution of the environment” and put that problem on the list of priorities. Also, there has emerged a special term “electromagnetic smog”, by analogy with air pollution.

Some researchers have slammed electromagnetic smog as one of the most powerful factors that affect the human body these days. It has been established that the electromagnetic radiation of all instruments around the globe that humans have created exceed the Earth’s own geomagnetic field millions of times.

Research is in progress into how radio signals affect human health. Several hundred pieces of research have been held over the past decade alone. Quite often they produce very different results. The World Health Organization has changed its attitude to the influence of cell phones and base stations on humans several times.

In Russia, the pollution of the environment with electromagnetic fields as a whole, as many experts say, has acquired dangerous dimensions. Such radiation is emitted by high voltage power lines, electricity-driven transport, radars, radio transmitters, PCs, household appliances, cell communication systems, industrial microwave systems and others.

Scientists at the Burdenko Medical Institute in Voronezh have found out electromagnetic fields cause changes in blood plasma, affect the electrical conductivity of cells, erythrocytes and lymphocytes. A team of scientists at the Northwestern Research Institute of Hygiene and Public Health has conducted long-term examination of people who by virtue of their employment are exposed to strong electromagnetic fields. It has been established that with the passage of time they develop clinical forms of neuroses and psychic desadaptation.

Doctor of Medical Sciences Valentina Nikitina, a specialist on the problem of electromagnetic fields, has found that electromagnetic fields cause vegetovascular dystonia, hypertonic diseases, and atherosclerotic cardiosclerosis. However, it should be understood that these diseases occur only in those who are in constant contact with these fields.

Russian doctors acknowledge that the effects of high frequency radiation on the human body are still poorly studied. In the meantime, the popularity of all sorts of unconventional means of protection is soaring. Various sorts of bracelets and stickers are said to be able to ward off harmful electromagnetic radiation. Whether they are effective remains an open question.

As for scientists, their ideas of how to protect oneself from electromagnetic pollution are very simple. Stay no less than one and a half meters away from a working TV set or a microwave, and an arm’s length away from the PC monitor. And try to turn off Wi-Fi transmitters at least for the night. As for cell phones, use them as seldom as possible.

Anomalous magnetic fields negatively impact Large Intestine flora
Russia Created: 17 Jul 2013
Abstract, AIM: Study the possible qualitative and quantitative changes of microbial community of the parietal mucin of the large intestine and the state of the wall of the large intestine in experimental animals under background and anomalous influence of geomagnetic field.

MATERIALS AND METHODS:
CBA mice were put under the influence of anomalous magnetic field comparable to its intensity in Zheleznogorsk (3 Oe) for 1 and 2 weeks. Quantitative and qualitative study of mucous microflora of the large intestine of the mice was performed by bacteriological method. Identification of the microorganisms was performed by microbiological analyzer "Multiskan-Ascent" and commercial test-systems "Lachema-Czech Republic": ENTHEROtest-16, STAPHYtest-16, Streptotest-16, En-COCCUStest-16; for lactobacilli and bifidobacteria identification - API 50 CHL (bioMerieux). Bacteria content in 1 g of material was calculated by the number of microorganism colonies grown.

RESULTS:
A pattern of changes of mucous microflora of the intestine and the state of the wall of the large intestine of the experimental animals that had been put under the influence of anomalous magnetic field is shown. During evaluation of qualitative and quantitative diversity of microbial community of parietal mucin of the large intestine of the mice under the influence of magnetic field on the background and anomalous levels changes not only in quantity and frequency of detection of obligate, transitory flora but also cell elements of mucous membrane of the wall of the large intestine were established.

CONCLUSION:
The results of the study allow to make a conclusion about the presence of reactivity of the parietal microflora of the intestine of the mice to the influence of the anomalous magnetic field. This leads to changes in cell elements in the mucous membrane of the wall that manifest by infiltration of the connective tissue stroma by leucocytes and reconstruction of epithelium, that are features of dysbiosis.

Wi-Fi technology – an uncontrolled global experiment on the health of mankind
Russia Created: 1 Jun 2013

Wi-Fi technology – an uncontrolled global experiment on the health of mankind
http://www.viewdocsonline.com/document/6kn1ey

More than 10 years ago, at the WHO organized meeting on harmonization of standards one of the authors pointed out that neglecting the hazard of high-frequency EMF for children is a crime against humanity (Markov, 2001).

We believe that scientific community must be more insisting in comprehension of potential hazard that mobile exchange of information is potentially invoked in human organisms. In that aspect, it is very important that the IARC classified the RF EMF as a possible cancerogene (2B). It is important to note tha tfor less than two years this major International Agency switched from “no conclusive evidence for health hazard” to “possible cancerogen”.

SNIP

In 2003, IEEE published astandard that affirmed that biological effects can only be thermal (Cho & D’Andrea, 2003). No heat – no effect. This policy serves very well in the industry and creates a serious barrier preventing biology-based assessment of the human health. The scientific community must be more insisting in comprehension of potential hazard that mobile exchange of information potentially invoke in human organisms.

SNIP

In conclusion, we would like to point out the following:

1. For a number of reasons, the evaluation and prevention of hazard from ionizing radiation have been developed during the last 60 years.

2. The problem of potential hazard of nonionizing radiation is studied for significantly shorter period of time and significant differences in standards indifferent countries can be seen. It is due to the fact that in North America thestandards are based on engineering computation, while in former Soviet Unionand Easter Europe the standards are biologically based. Despite all efforts of the WHO for harmonization of standards, today standards do not consider the real pollution of the environment with nonionizing radiation.

3. The comparison of both sources of radiation leads to conclusion that thecontinuous noncontrolled exposure of the entire civilization to low-intensity EMFs represents now more serious problem for the mankind than ionizingradiation where the sources of radiation are under strict control and are well localized.

4. For the first time in the history of mankind, because of aggressive use of mobilephones children are exposed to harmful nonionizing radiation and potentially aresubject of larger risk than adults. Even if the dose received by the children’s brainis the same as for adults, due to the specificity of the body size and physiologicaldevelopment, children are in greater danger. It might be compared to the hazardof EMF for professional groups.

5. In early 2012, the European Parliament voted by 512 to 16 to urge member countries to impose stricter limits for exposure to radiation from mobile phone and Wi-Fi technologies, especially taking care for the most sensitive population of children.

6. The scientific and medical communities are obliged to ring the bell – the health and standardization institutions must urgently develop recommendations and actions for protection of the civilization and especially children.

7. We should stop telling the science, politicians and general population that Wi-Fi is harmless.

8. We should better be honest and say that “we do not know what long-term effects might be.”

Massive Worldwide Snooping network exposed
Russia Created: 15 Jan 2013
It might have taken five years to discover, but a government-snooping spying campaign dubbed Red October has been exposed by Kaspersky Lab.

Kaspersky Lab has discovered yet another worldwide spying campaign that targets governmental bodies, political groups and research institutions.

On par with the memorable Flame malware, Kaspersky and a number of Cyber Emergency Response Teams (CERTs) discovered the malware -- known as Rocra or Red October -- which mostly targets institutions based in Eastern Europe, former USSR members and countries in Central Asia.

Kaspersky says that Red October has been gathering data and intelligence from "mobile devices, computer systems and network equipment" and is currently still active. Data is gathered and sent to multiple command-and-control servers which the security firm says rivals the complex nature of Flame.

The malware is sent via a spear-phishing email which, according to the firm, targets carefully-selected victims with an organization. Containing at least three different exploits in Microsoft Excel and Word, the infected files, once downloaded, drops a trojan on to the machine which then scans the local network to detect if any other devices are vulnerable to the same security flaw.

By dropping modules that can complete a number of "tasks," usually as .dll libraries, an infected machine obeys commands sent by the command center and then immediately discards the evidence. Separated in to "persistent" and "one-time" tasks, the malware is able to spy and steal in a number of ways, including:

- Waiting for a Microsoft Office or PDF document and executing a malicious payload embedded in that document;
- Creating one-way covert channels of communication,
- Recording keystrokes, making screenshots,
- Retrieve e-mail messages and attachments;
- Collect general software and hardware environment information,
- Extracting browsing history from Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera, and saving passwords,
- Extracting Windows account hashes;
- Extract Outlook account information,
- Performing network scans, dump configuration data from Cisco devices if available.

Some .exe tasks remain on the system while waiting for the correct environment, for example, waiting for a phone to connect. Microsoft's Windows Phone, the iPhone and Nokia models are all said to be vulnerable.

Designed to steal encrypted files and even those that have been deleted from a victim's computer, the malware -- named as a hat-tip to the novel "The Hunt for Red October" -- has several key features which suggests it may be state-sponsored, although there is no official word on this yet.

Among the features, there is a "resurrection module" within the malware which keeps the infection hidden, disguised as a plugin for a program such as Microsoft Office, which can then reincarnate the infection after removal.

In addition, Red October does not simply focus on standard machines, but is also able to infect and steal data from mobile devices, hijacking information from external storage drives, accessing FTP servers and thieving information from email databases.

In order to control the network of infection, Kaspersky says that over 60 domain names and several different servers, hosted in various countries, are employed. In order to keep the main command center secret, the C&C infrastructure works as a huge network of proxies.

Kaspersky believes that the cyberattackers have been active for a minimum of five years, based on domain name registration dates and PE timestamps, and the firm "strongly believes" that the origins of the malware are Russian.

This high-profile network may suggest that state sponsorship could be involved. As Kaspersky Labs notes:

The information stolen by the attackers is obviously of the highest level and includes geopolitical data which can be used by nation states. Such information could be traded in the underground and sold to the highest bidder, which can be of course, anywhere.

Any information harvested, including stolen credentials or confidential data, is stored for later use. For example, if an attacker needs to guess a password in another location, it is possible that harvested data could provide clues -- creating an espionage network full of intelligence that hackers can refer to in need. After at least five years of activity, the Russian security firm believes that at least 5 terabytes of confidential information could have been stolen.

"During the past five years, the attackers collected information from hundreds of high profile victims although it's unknown how the information was used. It is possible that the information was sold on the black market, or used directly," Kaspersky said.

The majority of infections are based in Russia, although Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, the U.S. and Italy have all reported cases. The exploits appear to have Chinese origins, whereas the malware modules may have a Russian background.

Red October was first brought to Kaspersky's attention in October 2012 after a tip of of an anonymous source. A full report on the spying campaign is due to be published this week.

Professor Yury Grigoriev calls for order! and the world needs to listen
Russia Created: 22 Aug 2012
The Russian National Committee on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection has agreed to provide a detailed report for the world containing clear information on the most important Russian research results in RF/EMF radiation over the past 50 years.

RF/EMF researchers and environmental activists, Eileen O’Connor, Director for the UK Radiation Research Trust charity and Sissel Halmøy, Chairman for the International EMF Alliance and Secretary General for the Citizens´ Radiation Protection in Norway recently returned from a trip to meet with top scientists at the Russian Federation.

Halmøy said: “According to the RNCNIRP, the following health hazards are likely to be faced by children who use mobile phones in the near future: disruption of memory, decline of attention, diminishing learning and cognitive abilities, increased irritability, sleep problems, increase in sensitivity to the stress, increased epileptic readiness. Action must be taken immediately to adopt biologically based guidelines to protect children.” Current standards are based more on engineering needs than biological studies.

O’Connor said “The Russian report is a gift to the world. The UK Radiation Research Trust will present the report in the Autumn to the Rt Hon Iain Duncan Smith MP and will be forwarded to the UK Chief Medical Officer, Professor Dame Sally Davies.”

She added “Russian scientists are advanced in their knowledge on RF/EMF radiation and have extended the hand of friendship and are willing to share their expertise and knowledge. I hope decision makers from the western world accept this great honour and work together.”

Russian research offers crucial and important aspects of developmental relevance that conveys a sense of urgency for the global RF/EMF framework. Without it, national governments may not be able to ensure the health of future generations are protected, especially that of our children.

Russian warnings exists urging pregnant women to avoid using mobile phones entirely along with children under eighteen. Likewise, Germany, India, the United Kingdom, Israel, Finland, Belgium and Toronto, Canada, have issued health warnings for children to not use mobile phones, or for emergency use only. Unfortunately, most children, parents, doctors and teachers are not aware of this important information.

Furthermore, in May 2011 the World Health Organisation and IARC issued a classification stating that radio frequency - electromagnetic fields are possibly carcinogenic to humans (group 2B). This warning is issued not only for mobile phones and phone masts, but for Wi-Fi, smart meters, wireless computers and all applications of technology on the RF/EMF Spectrum (radio-frequency radiation to electromagnetic radiation.)

Chairman of Russian National Committee on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection, member of International Advisory Committee of WHO "EMF and Health" Professor Yury Grigoriev said: “The brain is a critical organ. Vital brain structures are under EMF exposure daily when using a mobile phone. The brain is made up of permanent complex biophysical processes and vital functions. We need to take care with mobile phones and use distance and reduce time. Children should use mobile phones for emergencies only and also use hands free.”

Deputy Chairman, Russian National Committee on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection, Professor Oleg Grigoriev said: “We need correct control and assessment of electromagnetic pollution. There are currently a lot of new frequencies containing modulation and no one knows the results which could be a serious problem.”

Russian scientists are also warning countries throughout the world including ministries of health and other organizations, responsible for the population safety (including children), to pay attention to the regulation of mobile phones and Wi-Fi use in kindergardens and are recommending the usage of wired networks in schools and educational institutions, rather than a network using wireless broadband systems, including Wi-Fi.

The Russians stand by their solid research which has consistently shown that prolonged exposure to RF/EMF radiation disturbs cognitive function.

For protection from RF/EMF non-ionizing radiation, many countries have adopted a set of guidelines provided by private group of industry-friendly scientists known as ICNIRP. The ICNIRP guidelines are for short-term, acute thermal RF/EMF exposure. The current ICNIRP, IEEE standards are based on the preconceived and out dated view of government authorities that the only possible established biological effect of RF/EMF exposure is tissue heating.

The Russian standards are supported by science as a result of extensive research and take into account the dangers of non-thermal exposure. The standards are also backed by the Russian Ministry of Health and are a small fraction of what is allowed by ICNIRP and the IEEE which is currently adopted in many counties.

Research clearly underlines the need for action on mobile phones and wireless technology. We need to launch global government backed hard-hitting advertising campaign especially for children, and large health warnings should be clearly visible on all RF/EMF emitting equipment. Mass media campaigns can also create awareness.

O’Connor said: “I am grateful to the Rt Hon Iain Duncan Smith for offering to submit the Russian report to the UK Chief Medical Officer and hope that Government and health agencies worldwide listen to concerns raised by Russian and independent scientists and urgently adopt health based RF/EMF standards to protect human health. We need to provide as swift solution to this problem as soon as possible. We simply cannot afford to wait.”

Russian scientists recognise the value of non-Government groups in discussion and research. Deputy Chairman, Russian National Committee on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection, Professor Oleg Grigoriev said: “We need to include non-Government groups in discussion and research. Non-Government groups play an equal importance to Government and the scientific community. NGO’s are a new power and are representing people with electrosensitivity (ES) and should be an equal player.”

He added that “If the decisions are not made together with the NGOs, then decisions may have no value.”

The UK Radiation Research Trust, Citizens´ Radiation Protection in Norway and International EMF Alliance are calling for the Governments to engage with NGO’s and Independent (non-telecommunications funded) scientists.

It’s time for action!

RussCNIRP strongly advises against WIFI in schools
Russia Created: 28 Jun 2012
Recommendations of the Russian National Committee on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection of the necessity to regulate strictly the use of Wi-Fi in kindergartens and schools.

June 19, 2012. Moscow, Russia.

Mobile cellular communication is getting more popular among children of different ages.
Children excel adult population in the mobile phone calls use. At the same time, there is a daily brain exposure of EMF RF.
In addition, all children are constantly exposed of EMF RF from base stations. The problem of the children's health maintenance in the development of wireless communications was set up as priority by World Health Organization.

Electromagnetic radiation from Wi-Fi creates an additional burden for the child brain, whose body is in a state of development and the formation of mental activity. During this period, children are most susceptible to adverse environmental factors (WHO, publication number 3, April 2003).
It is necessary to note that the existing standards have been developed, without consideration of this additional exposure of EMF.

RussCNIRP consider necessary:

1. Ministry of Health and other organizations, responsible for the population safety (including children), should pay attention to the regulation of Wi-Fi use in kindergartens and schools; to the strengthening of sanitary control of the Wi-Fi using and to the development of an appropriate regulatory framework.

2. To recommend the usage of wired networks in schools and educational institutions, rather than a network using wireless broadband systems, including Wi-Fi.

"I am in electro fire danger ... save me ..." (Source link in Russian)
Russia Created: 9 Sep 2011
Beggars Opera "Lose a Life (a nano opera based on a true story)" (2010)
To begin with a little help: electro - a term in the field of environmental health, indicating an increased dependence of man on the electromagnetic fields of different frequencies, ranging from static electricity, and ending with the microwave range. According to the World Health Organization on the planet has about 5% of the electro-sensitive individuals. This interest group is owned and leader Ricky Gardiner BO. In order to raise public awareness of such a rare, but important issue, the wife of Gardiner, singer and keyboardist Scott of Virginia has taken a very bold step - she created a mini-opera, which builds on the experience of observing the suffering of her husband. Thus, "Lose a Life" - the most personal album for both, "the sound of my biography of those years, which is marked by confrontation electro nightmare," as it deals with Ricky. By the way, the method of treatment used in the treatment of Gardiner, included a number of restrictions on the use of household appliances - from televisions, computers and CD-players to microwave ovens and mobile phones. So write the music for "Lose a Life" - a kind of heroism on the part of middle-aged actor, who was able to flood the plate with bright electric guitars parties. And now I come to the point.
In comparison with the disc "Close to My Heart" (2007) present creation Beggars Opera is not only more coherent, but different in stylistic terms. Having taken the reins of the project management in the hands of Virginia has built a composite fabric of the program by the laws of classical opera. However, the Arranger of these things actually were not affected. Note the dramatic narrative sets the entry "Electrofire Invasion". 11.5 These largely instrumental in keeping minutes of flow solemn and gloomy keyboard orchestrations, sets off the smooth play of drummer Tom Gardiner and enhanced hail gusts of guitar Exercise Ricky. The apotheosis of space Rhapsody is a call for help: "I am in electro fire danger ... save me ..." Conditions gloomy introspection of their own inherited episode number 2 - "Electro Half Light", in whose palette converge line progressive trance opera and quite unexpected reasons Scottish jig. "Masts on My Roof" - a great opportunity to demonstrate the wonders of Mrs. Scott, vocal skill. To heighten the effect of choral refrains texture based on the application of plural voice. And all this ringing a crystal-tonal splendor harmoniously side by side with hard distortion grooves and space-synth textures saundskeypovymi. In the midtempo number "Cosmic Tango" expressive string riffs mastermind cardiac currents saturate every cell in the etude, while the percussion-note polyphonic setting for the final stage adds a healthy dose of pathos of history. Artistic peak of the concept can be considered the head of "Dr. Carlo" - a hypnotic prog-rock, made of highly original recipe. The denouement of the action - a wordless finale "Tango for the End of Time", formed by the stratagem of pseudo-symphonic passages with moderate doses of the arsenal of hard-rock, an unusual sketch, intended to awaken in the listener a great thirst for life.
To sum up: quite strong and stylish release of unfading family tandem. I advise you to read.
