New Italian study shows bird breeding affected by cellphone masts A new Italian study of white stork breeding habits has found that stork nests nearest Cellphone masts have significantly lower fledgling numbers. The white stork habitually builds nests in urban areas on chimneys and roof tops, where the full impact of cellphone radiations is most likely, and thus provides a useful model for investigating whether cellphones can affect their breeding. Six previous studies (known collectively as the Henhouse Project) have shown that exposure to magnetic fields can adversely affect chick embryos leading to abnormalities in the neural tube. Other researchers have reported adverse effects on kestrels as well as on fishes and small mammals, and the magnetic sensitivity of birds is also well known, but the impact of EMFs on the avian world is largely unresearched. Present received opinion is that declining bird species populations are the result of chemical pesticides. RESPUESTA INMEDIATA A LA AETIC DEL COLECTIVO DE AFECTADOS POR LA TELEFONIA MOVIL DE NAVARRA En nombre del Colectivo de Afectados por la Telefonía Móvil de Navarra queremos contestar públicamente a las afirmaciones que realizan en un diario navarro el día de hoy Domingo 2 de Octubre sobre las antenas de telefonía móvil en las que "expertos" de la AETIC ( Asociación de Empresas de Electrónica, Tecnologías de la Información y Telecomunicaciones de España ) niegan cualquier riesgo derivado de esta tecnología y sostienen que es perjudicial alejar las antenas de las ciudades. Nos gustaría hacer varias puntualizaciones a estas afirmaciones: 1.- Que no existe evidencia científica alguna de que incluso con valores miles de veces más bajos que los legales estas radiaciones de telefonía móvil sean inocuas y desde luego nunca se ha podido probar a largo plazo y en las condiciones en los que ahora y desde hace años están expuestas millones de personas en sus viviendas o lugares de trabajo expuestos a la radiación de las antenas o a través del uso del móvil. La argumentación debe ser la contraria a la que nos plantean las operadoras: deben ser las operadoras las que demuestren la inocuidad de esta tecnología y no los afectados los que demuestren sus efectos. Este argumento no es nuevo y ha sido soporte de diferentes sentencias judiciales como la del juzgado de primera instancia de Bilbao referido a una antena de telefonía móvil ( caso Erandio ) que fue ratificada por la Audiencia Provincial y en la que concluía que debe ser el tercero ( las operadoras ) quien tiene que acreditar la legitimidad de su ejercicio de intromisión y /o la inocuidad de la radiaciones. 2.- Los expertos de la AETIC niegan cualquier posibilidad de rotura del ADN celular y por tanto de cáncer en las radiaciones no ionizantes y nosotros le contestamos que con una pequeña energía en el rango de las radiofrecuencias Lai y Phillips, fueron capaces de romper simples y dobles enlaces del ADN de cerebros de rata, inhibiendo dicho efecto administrando previamente melatonina a las ratas. De esta manera postulaban un mecanismo mediado por la formación de radicales libres que supone desaparear un electrón de su pareja formante de la unión o enlace químico. Es decir, que una energía no necesariamente ionizante puede modificar el momento del spin del electrón de forma que se produce un rechazo entre ambos capaz de separarlos y formar un electrón libre capaz de producir un efecto en cadena que explicaría la rotura de los enlaces del ADN. Más recientemente, en diciembre de 2004 se difundieron los resultados del Proyecto "REFLEX" (acrónimo de "Risk Evaluation of Potential Environmental Hazards from Low Energy Electromagnetic Field (EMF) Exposure Using Sensitive in vitro Methods") en el que 12 equipos de investigación de 7 países de la Unión Europea presentaron unos resultados demoledores: La radiación de las antenas y de los teléfonos móviles a los niveles autorizados actualmente provocan efectos genotóxicos (daños genéticos y celulares). Tras esto es difícil Srs de la AECTIC que nos tranquilicemos y menos cuando nos enteramos de que dicho estudio deja de recibir financiación y es finiquitado no se sabe muy bien porqué , al igual que otros que tenían líneas de investigación que apuntaban en la misma dirección como el de J.L. Bardasano cuyo centro de investigación Alonso de Santacruz fue clausurado o el de Dr. Roger Santini de Francia que fue cesado de su actividad en el estudio de los campos electromagnéticos o más recientemente el intento de cese en su investigación sobre campos electromagnéticos del Director del Centro de investigación del Hospital la Fe de Valencia Dr. Claudio Gómez Perreta. En todo caso estos resultados científicos no aportan demasiadas novedades. Aunque la industria y algunas autoridades los han ignorado sistemáticamente, son la replicación de los trabajos del equipo de Henry Lai desde hace cerca de 10 años, cuando el despliegue de la telefonía móvil se encontraba en sus albores. Existen numerosa literatura científica sobre el tema que estaríamos encantados en facilitarles, y que explican que con valores incluso por debajo de 0,0006 microwatios / cm2 ( en Navarra se permiten 200 microwatios/cm2 para frec. de tfnia móvil) en frecuencias de telefonía móvil ya se producen serios daños en la salud humana( Oberfield, Navarro,Pórtoles,Maestu,Gómez Perreta C. 2004 The microwave Síndrome: A preliminary Study in Spain. Elecromagnetic Biology and Medicine, 22: 161-169). Ah, y les recordamos que este estudio , por ejemplo, está reconocido como bibliografía relevante sobre el tema por la OMS ( Organización Mundial de la Salud), el Parlamento escocés , la Agencia Suiza de medio ambiente y la Real Sociedad de Canadá. Más que nada adelantándonos un poco a que nos contesten como la Sanidad navarra que al presentarle este informe dijo que no era relevante como para considerarlo. En su explicación la AETIC comentan que las antenas de FM y TV emiten con más potencia que las de telefonía móvil .Pues a esto decirles que nada tienen que ver las frecuencias de la telefonía móvil con las de FM . La FM trabaja en frecuencias cercanas a los 90-100 Mhz y la telefonía Móvil trabaja con frecuencias pulsantes de muy diferente naturaleza y de potencias mucho más energéticas ( 900-2.300 Mhz). Las antenas de radio y televisión suelen instalarse alejadas de la población al contrario que las de telefonía. Y ambas son perjudiciales para la salud. Existen muchos estudios sobre los daños de las antenas de FM y TV esto, entre otros citaremos a : -MASKARINEC, G., COOPER, J. & L. SWYGERT (1994),DOLK, H., ELLIOT, G., SHADDICK, G., WALLS, P. & B. THAKRAR (1997b). Respecto a telefonía móvil y menores existen innumerables recomendaciones, desaconsejando el uso del teléfono móvil para los niños y adolescentes. Así se manifiesta en innumerables recomendaciones, tales como el informe Steward, Reino Unido ( abril, 2000 ) ; la Academia Alemana de Pediatría ( diciembre , 2000 ) ; el Bundesamt fur Stralenschutz, organismo para la protección de las radiaciones en Alemania ( Julio 2001 ) ; el ministerio de medio ambiente de Bangladesh ( junio 2002 ); el comité Nacional Ruso para la protección de las radiaciones no ionizantes ( septiembre, 2001 ) . En nuestro país, sin embargo el teléfono móvil sigue siendo el regalo estrella para los adolescentes, incluso niños , gozando del favor de la publicidad en los medios de comunicación y sin que ningún responsable sanitario de nuestro país advierta de los posibles daños. Sin comentarios. Decir también que la Agencia Internacional de Investigación del Cáncer en la clasificación de sustancias carcinógenas, incluye las ondas electromagnéticas en la categoría de posible carcinógeno humano ( grupo 2B). 3.-Por tanto Srs de la AETIC creemos que sí que hay un debate científico importante como para al menos aplicar el principio de precaución y exigir que sean las operadoras las que demuestren la inocuidad y no al revés. Este es el motivo por el que tantos Ayuntamientos están preocupados y están sacando Ordenanzas Municipales para tratar de regular esta tecnología que se ha desplegado de forma brutal sin ningún control hace muchos años y que pretenden asumamos. Pues no Srs de la AETIC: Vds son los que deberían demostrarnos la inocuidad de esta tecnología antes de haber desplegado una sola antena y no al revés. Suponemos que los Ayuntamientos tratan de proteger a sus vecinos alejando las antenas , pero Vds les dicen que no , que al alejarlas emiten con más potencia. Aquí Srs de la AETIC el problema es la radiación que recibe el vecino 24 horas al día sin capacidad de elección ( el móvil también nos preocupa, pero al menos lo puedes apagar) y eso es lo que pedimos que se reduzca drásticamente. No aceptamos los actuales valores de la Ley , porque nos parecen muy elevados tal y como hemos argumentado con informes científicos y serán Vds los que tendrán que buscar la alternativa tecnológica y no los Ayuntamientos o los vecinos. En todo caso, nos parece contradictorio que en la Ley Foral se hable de zonas sensibles o que se hable de un volumen de seguridad próximo a la antena y luego nos digan que alejar las antenas es perjudicial. Es un cúmulo de contradicciones que nosotros no estamos obligados a resolver técnicamente. En nuestra opinión deba primar el principio de precaución, minimizar al máximo los riesgos sanitarios y buscar alternativas tecnológicas más respetuosas con la salud humana que reduzcan drásticamente los actuales niveles de radiación . Y si no estamos seguros no actuar como hasta ahora con la política de hechos consumados, colocando miles de antenas. Hazards of Electromagnetic Fields for children Though technologic developments bring social and economic benefits to the society, the health consequences of these are difficult to predict and manage. With rapid advances in electromagnetic field (EMF) technologies and communications, children are increasingly exposed to EMFs at an earlier age. Due to an association between childhood leukemia and exposure to extremely low frequency (ELF) magnetic fields they are classified as a "possible human carcinogen." Concerns about the potential vulnerability of children to radio frequency (RF) fields have been raised, as their developing nervous systems are more susceptible. In addition, their brain tissue is more conductive, RF penetration is greater relative to head size, and they will have a longer lifetime of exposure than adults. To evaluate information relevant to children's sensitivity to ELF and RF EMFs, the World Health Organization held an expert workshop in Istanbul, Turkey, in June 2004. A recent article, published in the August issue of Pediatrics, is based on discussions from the workshop, and suggests that the exposure to toxic agents with mutagenic and carcinogenic potential, such as ionizing radiation, cancer chemotherapeutic drugs, and some chemicals, poses risks for the induction or progression of cancer during embryonic and childhood development. Ionizing radiation given at large doses is one of the few known risk factors for childhood leukemia and brain cancer. Radio and television broadcasts, mobile phones and base stations, and other communications infrastructure produce RF fields. The evidence that induced electric fields might affect development of the nervous system and other tissue was discussed at the workshop in some detail. On the other hand, exposure to RF radiation induces heating in body tissues and imposes a heat load on the whole body. Hyperthermia during pregnancy can cause embryonic death, abortion, growth retardation, and developmental defects; animal studies indicate that the development of the CNS is especially susceptible. Regarding the long-term health effects of mobile-phone use, it is suggested that low-cost precautionary measures are appropriate, especially because some of the exposures are close to guideline limits. Children’s RF exposure can be reduced by restricting the length of calls or by using hands-free devices to keep mobile phones away from the head and body. Because of widespread use of mobile phones and relatively high exposures to the brain among children and adolescents, investigation of the potential effects of RF fields on cognition and the development of childhood brain tumors was considered particularly urgent. The article concludes with a recommendation for additional research and the development of precautionary policies in the face of scientific uncertainty.

MURCIA El Supremo obliga a Iberdrola a retirar un transformador para evitar radiaciones La sentencia, pionera, servirá a miles de ciudadanos para emprender acciones legales contra las emisiones de ondas electromagnéticas PEPA GARCÍA/MURCIA Nadie hubiera apostado un duro por Francisco Hernández y su esposa cuando en 1997 decidieron enfrentarse en los tribunales contra un gigante de la energía eléctrica. Tuvieron que hacer las maletas y abandonar su hogar, y esperar 9 años para que la justicia les diera la razón. Ahora, un auto del Tribunal Supremo ha ratificado las dos sentencias anteriores, una del Juzgado de Primera Instancia nº 6 de Murcia, en el 2000, y otra de la Sección Primera de la Audiencia Provincial de Murcia, en 2001; y lo que es más importante, sin posibilidad de recurso por parte de Iberdrola. El auto condena a Iberdrola a alejar el transformador o aislarlo hasta que el nivel de radiación sea cero. Y, si fuese inviable, a indemnizar a los demandantes con una vivienda de las mismas características y en la misma zona exenta de radiación o con el valor de la vivienda en el mercado, más una indemnización de 600.000 pesetas por daños morales. Esta sentencia, que sienta como base el principio de precaución -son las operadoras las que tienen que demostrar más allá de toda duda que su tecnología es inocua para la salud-, considera probado que la vivienda de Francisco Hernández estaba sometida a una radiación muy superior a la normal y que «si bien es cierto que no existe prueba actual de daño físico alguno no lo es menos que se puede derivar la existencia de un daño moral que viene constituido y fundamentado en el elemental y normal desasosiego e intranquilidad que surge en unas personas por la posibilidad de que en donde desarrolla los elementos más esenciales de su vida, esto es en su vivienda, se están produciendo una serie de emisiones que pudieran ser nocivas para salud, tanto de ellos como de sus hijos. Circunstancias todas éstas que tienen un difícil encaje con lo previsto tanto en el artículo 15.1 de la Constitución Española (derecho a la vida y a la integridad física), 18.1 y 2 (derecho a la intimidad personal e inviolabilidad del domicilio) y artículo 45.1 3 del mismo texto legal (derecho a disfrutar del medio ambiente y obligación de reparar los daños causados contra este medio ambiente)», reza la sentencia. El tribunal, incluso, amplió en la sentencia los argumentos jurídicos de la demandada con la aplicación la Ley General Consumidores y Usuarios (LGCU), Ley 26/1984 de 19 de Julio, tanto por lo que respecta a su derecho como consumidores a la indemnización por los daños y los perjuicios ocasionados, como por el derecho a la protección contra los riesgos que puedan afectar a la salud o seguridad. Una ley que reconoce el derecho al consumidor a que se adopten medidas puramente preventivas, que no es otra cosa que la casa esté libre de campos electromagnéticos que pudieran ser perjudiciales para la salud. Esta resolución sienta las bases para la lucha que cientos de comunidades de vecinos han iniciado en los últimos años contra las antenas de telefonía móvil, los transformadores, las torres eléctricas y las estaciones base tanto en la Región de Murcia como en el resto de España. Sentencia histórica contra la contaminación electromagnética 10 oct (Ecologistas en Acción) Los magistrados consideraban probada la existencia de una inmisión electromagnética en el interior de un domicilio, basándose en la prueba de las mediciones efectuadas, y establecen criterios muy restrictivos, señalando que el valor límite de inmisión del campo electromagnético en el interior de vivienda debe ser nulo. Frente a esta resolución no cabe ninguna apelación. Para Ecologistas en Acción, organizaciones vecinales y de afectados, que califican esta sentencia de histórica, este hecho marca un punto de inflexión en la lucha contra la contaminación electromagnética producida por los campos electromagnéticos de baja frecuencia derivados de transformadores, subestaciones y líneas eléctricas. La proliferación descontrolada y caótica de estas infraestructuras eléctricas, especialmente de transformadores en el interior de los edificios han hecho que cada vez más se esté expuesto de una manera residencial y continua a estas emisiones electromagnéticas La IARC (Agencia Internacional de Investigación sobre el Cáncer) ha incluido los Campos Electromagnéticos de Baja Frecuencia (ELF) como posible cancerígeno, (categoría 2B), en sus listados. Organizaciones vecinales de afectados y ecologistas agrupadas en la Coordinadora Estatal contra la Contaminación Electromagnética, demandan un cambio significativo en la Ley 97 del Sector Eléctrico y de los reglamentos sobre transformadores, subestaciones y líneas de alta tensión, realizados en función de los intereses de las empresas eléctricas, en el sentido de eliminar cualquier tipo de afecciones sobre la salud y que contemplen bajo el principio de precaución valores límite de inmisión mucho más restrictivos y distancias de seguridad a zonas residenciales. Cell phones Experts investigating biological effects of cell phone radiation asked to shut up or quit jobs One of the most widely publicized cases of electrosensitivity is that of former Norwegian Prime Minister and now World Health Organization Director-General Gro Harlem Brundtland, who is also a medical doctor by profession. Brundtland says she is electrically sensitive to cell phones and computers and does not own a mobile phone but says that there is not yet enough scientific evidence to prove the devices are dangerous. An interview in March 2002 with the Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet has put the WHO Director-General on the top of the list of persons known to be sensitive to HF EMF – low-intensity but high-frequency electromagnetic fields – as reports accumulate that researchers who question the health aspects of the rapidly escalating multi-billion-dollar industries in mobile phones, computers and related technological marvels are being gagged, muzzled and being pressured out of their jobs. In Spain – reported the Cellular Phone Taskforce’s information-crammed No Place to Hide newsletter for June – a judge ordered 49 cell phone antennas removed from a rooftop in downtown Valladolid, the second time a Spanish court has ruled antennas should be removed for health reasons. “This time the fight was led by parents of children at Garcia Quintana Primary School, where three children had contracted acute lymphoblastic leukemia and one Hodgkin’s lymphoma since the antennas were installed,” reported the newsletter. Indeed, reported Arturo Soria y Puig, who provided information for both the Taskforce and Spain’s influential El Mundo newspaper: “. . . (T)he popular response to the rapid and chaotic installation of some 30.000 mobile phone antennas in Spain has been impressive. Because of judicial rulings (in a few cases) and because of pressure on municipal authorities (in the majority of cases) the mobile phone providers have had to disconnect and dismantle 2.000 already-installed antennas.” In Switzerland, an initiative to amend the Swiss Constitution and called “Moratorium on Mobile Telephone Antennas” would stop the construction of antennas particularly for “mobile telephony” as long as “the harmlessness of pulsed non-ionizing radiation, and of pulsed magnetic or electromagnetic fields, taking into account their non-thermal effects, has not been demonstrated.” The signature-gathering deadline is Sept. 12, 2003. In Oregon, Dr. William Morton, a professor at Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU) who pioneered studies into multiple chemical sensitivities (MCS) and their apparent relationship to porphyria and became one of a handful of physicians with experience in diagnosing and documenting electrical sensitivity (ES) chose to give up his medical license on Jan. 19 rather than continue to face a raft of complaints and allegations of misdiagnosis and further investigation by the Oregon Board of Medical Examiners. The Task Force noted that the widely respected physician and researcher will continue teaching at OHSU School of Medicine and continue to do research into MCS and ES. In France, Dr. Robert Santini, a veteran researcher in “bioelectromagnetics” said he had been forbidden by the director of the government laboratory with which he has long been associated from speaking to journalists, politicians and other researchers about “cellular phone and base station bioeffects.” On March 6 and at the request of two senators, he told the Parliamentary Office for the Evaluation of Science and Technology Choices: “We are witnessing today the development of pressure aimed at discrediting, within their institutions, certain researchers and their findings. These campaigns of moral and professional harassment are orchestrated, in particular, by certain cell phone providers, public health bodies and elected officials. Some scientists who work on the problem of the biological effects of cell phones and relay stations have recently been made the object, following these pressures, of discriminatory measures on the part of their institutions: firing, professional change, change of research topic, blockage of career, loss of collaborators, ban on speaking.” He referred to three examples of noted scientists in France and the case of Claudio Gomez Perretta MD in Valencia, Spain, who on Feb. 25 – four days after he wrote a letter to the Valencia Medical Assn. Expressing his concern that the Spanish equivalent of the American Medical Association had taken no position on the matter of HF EMF problems – was notified that he must discontinue his work on electromagnetic fields immediately. In his letter he reminded the local medical body: “Let us remember that there were once commissions that denied the dangers of tobacco, asbestos, and therapeutic X-rays.” In Sweden, a group of victims of electromagnetic sensitivity asked the prime minister and the prestigious Karolinska Institute not to proceed with threats to close down Karolinska’s Unit for Experimental Dermatology, whose Prof. Olle Johansson has produced some of the most riveting scientific questioning of the safety of cell phones and related devices. Said the Association for the Electrically Sensitive in Orebro County, Sweden, last Oct. 3 on hearing of a cutoff in funds for Prof. Johansson: “We see the lack of research funding and space as an affront not only to a scientist in whom we have great confidence but also to us and the handicapped organization to which we belong. In Germany, veteran medical physicist and researcher Dr. Lebrecht von Klitzing of the Medical University of Lubeck was forbidden by the University dean to address the German Bundestag (parliament) on the medical effects of cell phones, claiming such a presentation would damage the university’s reputation. The Task Force reported that von Klitzing, forbidden to do any more research on his own, resigned from the university in March in order to continue his research. In England, Dr. Gerald Hyland, University of Warwick, took early retirement in March following high-level pressures against his research into the biocompatibility of magnetic fields with the human organism. In Bangkok, Thailand, the English language Nation newspaper reporting May 24 on the near-ubiquity of mobile phones among Thai teenagers (“many teens oday are utterly devoted to their mobiles, even to the extent that they regard them as an extra limb”) accompanied its in-depth coverage with the following recitation of health risks known to be associated with the omnipresent gadgets: A study published in the UK (in April) suggested mobile phone use may be as addictive for teenagers as smoking. A recent British study reported that phone driving is more dangerous than drunk driving. The Transport Research Laboratory found reaction times for those driving on the phone was 30 percent slower than those driving drunk and nearly 50 percent worse than someone sober and not using a cell phone. The (Thai) Ministry of Public Health in 2001 recommended that people under 12 should not use a mobile phone, while studies on health risks – particularly the links to brain cancer – are underway by the World Health Organization. In 2000, a study by Action on Smoking and Health in London found a number of common traits, including the desire to rebel, prevalent among smokers as well as young cell-phone users. A recent study by the Physicists Association in Japan warned of the harm of using mobile phones in passenger trains. Researchers said “passengers might be harmed by microwaves emitted from phones, which reflect on the train’s metal structure and accumulate on the passengers.” The researchers suggested there should be a ban on the use of mobile phones in trains, busses and elevators. In her March 9 interview. WHO Director-General Gro Harlem Brundtland MD, a former prime minister who said she has never owned a mobile phone herself and that there now is reason to be cautious about the technology, told Dagbladet’s Aud Dalsegg: “In the beginning I felt a local warmth around my ear. But the problem grew worse, and turned into a strong discomfort and headaches every time I used a mobile phone.” At first she tried to avoid the pain by cutting her calls short, but this did not work. or was it sufficient to stop using the phones herself, because everyone around her, including at her workplace at the WHO in Geneva, used them. “I gradually understood that I had developed a sensitivity to this type of radiation,” she said, “and in order not to be suspected of being hysterical – that someone should believe that this was only something I imagined – I have made several tests: People have been in my office with their mobile phone hidden in their bag or pocket. Without my knowing whether it was off or on, we have tested my reaction. I have always reacted when the phone has been on – never when it is off. So there is no doubt.” As for wireless home phones, Brundtland said: “I get an instant reaction if I touch such a phone.” She also spoke about her reactions to computers: “If I hold a laptop in order to read what is on the screen it feels as if I get an electric shock up through my arms. So I must keep portable computers away from me. I have a regular desktop computer in my office, but only the secretary uses it. I have not noticed the same symptoms near it, but I turn it off as soon as I come in. The headaches she gets from mobile phone radiation subside about a half hour to an hour after the exposure stops, she said. Last year, the ICHF reported (ICHF V:2, 2001) on 20 years of Western-suppressed research from the former East Bloc which suggests the “microblitzing” of the human race by what was variously described as low-intensity but high-frequency electromagnetic fields or radiation (HF EMF, HF EMR) coming from cell phones, computers, television, antennas and a wide range of electrical marvels. By Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Weighing in on the debate about whether cell phones have adverse health effects, researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis have found that the electromagnetic radiation produced by cell phones does not activate the stress response in mouse, hamster or human cells growing in cultures. The stress response is a cellular protection mechanism set into motion by various adverse stimuli, including heat shock, heavy metals, and inflammation. High levels of the stress response in cells are thought to result in changes associated with malignancy. "We performed highly sensitive, extremely well-controlled tests on living cells irradiated with energy like that from mobile phones, but at levels 5 to 10 times higher than those set for the devices by regulatory agencies," says Andrei Laszlo, Ph.D., associate professor of radiation oncology and a researcher at the Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine. "We see no indication that factors involved in the stress response increase their activity as a result of such exposures." Prior research into the effect of cell phones on the stress response has been fraught with contradictory results, which in part may be due to less-than-ideal experimental conditions. or example, in the past it has been difficult to prevent temperature changes caused by microwave exposure. Because heating of tissues has been shown unlikely to be a component of the effect of cell phone radiation on biological systems, Laszlo and his group sought to reduce as far as possible any heating of the cells in culture during the study. Using sensitive equipment that continuously monitored and adjusted temperature, they were able to keep temperature variations to plus or minus 0.3 degrees centigrade. The researchers tuned their room-sized irradiator to emit cell phone frequency microwaves for both FDMA (frequency domain multiple access— used for cell phone analog signals) and CDMA (code domain multiple access—used for digital signals) modulation at power outputs standard for mobile phones. The large size of the irradiator enabled them to expose a large number of living cells so that sufficient material could be collected for highly accurate measurements. "We were able to combine very good physics with very good biology as a consequence of the expertise of our research team," Laszlo says. To test whether the cell's stress response was activated by irradiation, the group looked for activation of a protein called heat shock factor (HSF). he activation of HSF is a necessary first step in the cascade of events that induce the stress response. Under both short-term exposures (5-60 minutes) and long-term exposures (1-7 days), all tests on the cells in culture showed that HSF was not activated by microwave radiation of either type, indicating the stress response was not initiated. Top garda 'horrified' at bomb claim A senior garda said tonight he was horrified by allegations that one of his officers had built an explosive device in the yard of a garda station. The Morris Tribunal is investigating an arson attack on a controversial telecommunications mast in Ardara, Co Donegal in 1996 which had aroused strong local opposition. Superintendent Denis Cullinane, now retired, told the tribunal that after an arson attack on the mast, an explosive device was found attached to it two weeks later. “I was convinced it was a bomb,” he said. “It was a very sinister development. I felt the same people who had committed the malicious damage had done this.” Senior counsel Peter Charleton, representing the tribunal, asked him if he believed the device might have been planted by the Gardaí. “No that was the last thing in my mind, absolutely not. I heard it on a TV programme one night. I was horrified, I did not believe it, and I still don’t believe it,” said Mr Cullinane. The allegations about a garda making an explosive device in the yard of a Donegal garda station and then planting it on the mast were made on a TV3 current affairs programme, 20/20, in 2000. “I don’t believe in those circumstances that it was put there by a guard. I can’t see what the gardaí were going to gain out of it,” sai Mr Cullinane. The tribunal heard that locals in Ardara were opposed to the MMDS television system being installed on the mast because they were already able to pick up television signals from Northern Ireland and feared the potential health and financial costs of the new system. A large force of gardaí had to assemble at the mast site to allow company employees to pass the protestors in December 1995. Mr Cullinane said there had been good relations between the community and the Gardaí in the area but admitted that the mast issue had heightened tensions. “When the patrol cars were visiting the site, on a number of occasions nails were placed on the road and the tyres were punctured. Rolls of barbed wire were placed on the road,” he said. The locks on the gates to the mast were also stuck with glue. The arson attack on the mast in November 1996 came just days after the company installing the equipment had obtained a High Court injunction to prevent protestors from blocking access to the site. Around 50,000 euro of damage was caused by the fire. The crude device discovered on the mast two weeks later was described as being nothing more than an assembly of fireworks. But the person who created it was never found. The Morris Tribunal, which took Mr Culliane’s evidence out of turn to facilitate him, is due to conclude its investigations into the Silver Bullet module shortly. 13/10/2005 - 16:58:01
