Dear all. Please use thís chapter to debate the "Smart Meter" issue, which is now to become a reality in the UK. Many people in the USA are already suffering the health effects from this invasion into their homes and neighbourhoods.
What will happen to all the EHS sufferers, many of who have used costly methods to turn their homes into virtual "Farraday Cages" to protect them selves against nearby Mobile Masts, Neighbours Wi-Fi, Dect phones etc?
What will happen to us if/when we refuse to accept installation of the meters in our homes? Will it be made a criminal offence? Will the "Human Rights law" protect us against a forced installation of the meters?
We will bring more material on the issue as and when we can. In the meantime please add your views and opinions. http://www.mast-victims.org/index.php?content=news&action=view&type=newsitem&id=4463

This is horrendous news! I am electrosensitive. This plan for smart meters has got me very worried.
I have partly screened my home [windows] to reduce the phone mast radiation and DECT/Wifi from neighbours. I spend as little time as possible in the nearby HF-EMF swamped town as possible and spend most of my time at home. This year I have spent 4 weeks away in rented accomodation somewhere remote just to escape the radiation for a while. Wonderful!
How the devil are electrosensitive people supposed to live with this exposure? This latest madness by the government is depriving us of our Human Rights.
Please complain to your MPs, MEPs.

Dear Cloe. Thank you for your response. Like you we have screened our home, walls carbon paint, we still need to do the windows, our office has both carbon paint and window netting, so it´s really is a Faraday cage by now. Its just, that it is so expensive, you have to do it by bits as you can afford to.
If you dont refuse the installation, (when your utility company tells you they want to install a "Smart Meter" in your hall, or wherever your meters are placed) you will have a Wi-Fi device in your home and a mast to receive the signals just outside the house. Sure it´s a deprevation of our Human Rights (or deletion, if you ask me), but who cares, there´s big money at stake, for the utilities and the Government. and quite honestly, can you remember when last Either was concerned with OUR Human Rights? I´m 65 and I have a very hard time thinking back that far!
But, Please the thing to do now must be to NAME and SHAME our nearby HF/EMF town, as we need to warn others so they can shun going there for shopping etc. If WE ALL DO THAT, they (the town) will feel their Highstreet attractions downgraded (means lots less income) and that will make a mark on their sustanability and attitude, especially if we let them know they are on our Black-List!.
The town we had to abandon our home in is Worcester, Worcestershire. It was bad then (2003-4) because of the (planners, city councils) love of everything Microwave! And they gave Mast planning permissions for the asking to Any of the telecom companies, So, Today, it Worcester is totally horrid, Mobile Microwave Radiation every-where in the town centre and on the residential estates.
Hereford is not much better, riding the Microwave wherever they can. (Cash in the council coffers), no wonder they geta dvice from a former Worcester planning officer.
So, please take up my challenge. Name and Shame the place you live in, a city, town or village!
Because, remember, it wont stop with "Smart Meters" it will pile on from now on, next time it will be something else.
Lets compile our blacklist of places EHS cannot go to.
And yes, lets complaine to your MP or MEP, but then they are ALL for it! It means cash in the till!
Best regards. Agnes Ingvarsdottir. www.mast-victims.org

I really need to know what can be done to refuse one of these being installed in my home? There is no way I'm having it put in, whether it's compulsory or not.

I tried asking Utility First whether they would supply a wired meter to people who experienced electrosensitivity problems. The answer was NO. Basically, anyone who does not want a 'smart meter' should go elsewhere, was the response.

Hi Chloe,
Thanks for the info. *Is* there an elsewhere, though? I'm concerned at what options/rights we have to refuse these machines in our own property. Utility First's attitude doesn't surprise me though.

Your MP sounds about as helpful as ours.
I'm currently seeking legal advice against a telecoms company and/or the borough council regarding the giant mast outside our house - which is to be increased in power yet again - so I will possibly look into bringing up the subject of these blasted meters as well. This is all out of control, and there has to be something we can do, even if I have to resort to the UN convention of disabled rights and whatever minor legal technicalities I can get them on.

Our MP does not care about the health problems of the technology.
It gets ever worse - mobile phone masts, WiFi in many places, the neighbours get DECT/WiFi plus Wii games. We now have digitial TV which makes exposure worse.
Now this latest plan to subject us to the radiation in our own homes with these 'smart meters' is the last straw!
I'll be very interested to hear how you get on.

This is EXACTLY how I feel about it, "the last straw" indeed! Oh, and not forgetting the planned "clusters" of new Speed Cameras which will track vehicles using wi-fi in a radius of 15 miles. So we won't even be safe from this junk when we're out on a quiet country road.
Welcome to Hell, as someone once said.

It gets even worse here. Local MPs in Leyland [South Ribble Borough], Chorley Borough in Lancashire want to get wifi not only across their local boroughs, but also want to get wifi across the whole of the Lancashire County. They will attach wifi transmitters to the lampposts. So, there will be no escape for anyone who is or becomes electrosensitive in Lancashire.
I cannot financially afford to move. I am very worried. Chloe -------------------------------------------- Call for free internet for whole county Lancashire Evening Post Published Date: 14 December 2009 A Parliamentary campaign has been launched to make Lancashire Britain's first wifi county by rolling out free internet access to the entire population.
MPs say free wifi access would have "countless benefits" for businesses, residents and students and provide a huge economic boost.
The suggestion has been made in an Early Day Motion tabled by Chorley MP Lindsay Hoyle and signed by South Ribble MP David Borrow and Ribble Valley MP Nigel Evans.
The MPs want Lancashire County Council and the district councils to follow the example of Swindon borough council, which plans to offer free internet access to its residents.
No one within the borough boundary will be out of range of a wireless connection after April next year, when 1,400 access points will be placed on street lamps.
Mr Hoyle believes Swindon has drawn up a model which should be repeated. His EDM asks the government to back "forward thinking" projects elsewhere.

Borrow Mr Nigel Evans Mr Mike Hancock
* 20
Mrs Ann Cryer
That this House calls for Chorley Borough Council, Lancashire County Council and other authorities in Lancashire to replicate the ambitious and forward thinking project launch by Swindon Borough Council to provide free broadband access to all residents; notes that Swindon is the first town in the UK to initiate such a valuable project; acknowledges the scheme's provision of low connection speeds for free, pay as you go options for visitors and faster services for prices below market rates; recognises the countless benefits for businesses, consumers, young people and students being able to stay connected more easily; and asks the Government to support such schemes that are in line with their vision of universal broadband access by 2012.

Hi Chloe, I'm in the same position and it's truly frightening. I even - naively, as it turned out - emailed the legal adviser of MastAction UK a few weeks ago to ask his help on a particular matter concerning our council, and he ruled out any kind of hope for people like us. There's nothing you can do; you can't move, you have nothing in terms of Human Rights, basically you are stuffed. Which is VERY dangerous "advice" to be giving anyone who is suffering chronically from EHS, and who is at the end of their tether at the proposals of far more Wi-Fi in the near future.
Needless to say, I am ignoring what he said. A lot of it is simply untrue, and I suspect intended to dissuade me from taking on the council, the government and the telecoms giants. Especially as he has links to the phone companies anyway!

Thanks for posting all those Chloe, very interesting reading. Hopefully some of that will eventually prove fruitful. All the arguments, and weight of evidence, are there....it's how long these governments and telecom companies can continue to be allowed to get away with this rampant abuse of the law, and disregard for our basic rights.
Whether people like me, and you, and all the others out there, can last until that day arrives is another matter.

When we have all lost our memories, become so bad tempered we will not be able to work and our children cannot be educated because they cannot retain any knowledge, or sit still long enough to learn anything, then 'they' might do something about it. By which time they will not know why so many people have become so stupid. I have seen the changes over 30 years of teaching and believe me we are regressing. I think that those people who would not even consider that microwaves have any effect on them also to some extent show signs of health problems. People have become so antisocial, so bad tempered, so 'don't care'. At least those who recognise their symptoms can take some steps to avoid the more concentrated sources of microwaves, but many live in denial or ignorance. I urge you to talk to others about your symptoms even to the risk of being laughed at and you would be surprised how many out there are also affected and don't know why. This smart meter use will ensure that no one is safe anywhere.

Hi,
I would have thought they probably have the legal side taken care of regarding forcing you to take the meter. What I would think was less clear is if they have the right to modify your property to make the meter work i.e. they may force you to have a meter but there wouldn't be much point if the meter couldn't get a signal due to being in a well protected area.
Besides EHS sufferers and those concerned about the health risks of radiation, privacy and civil liberty groups are very concerned about these intrusive devices, so if awareness can be raised of them, the EHS sufferers will not be alone in their opposition to this.

Does that mean if we cover the meter with aluminium foil it will not work? and if enough people do it the whole thing will be a flop? It wories sick of what will happen to the next genertion if are going to be immersed in so much microwave radiation. I know how I feel with just being near a mobile phone. There will be no hiding place!

We are not currently looking to install Smart Meters across our customers as of yet however we are testing with some of domestic customers in Wales and a few commercial properties. As and when we do look to install Smart Meters we will contact you, and we will look for alternatives should this cause you health issues. If you have nay further queries please do not hesitate to contact us.
Yours sincerely

These guys havnt yet seen the potential in advertizing their services to EHS folks, but they soon might! I for one am writing to them with 1 off home + 1 off commercial property for gas and electricity, so I urge all of you to also write them a letter and ask if they will carry alternatives for people who have health effects from wireless and wi-fi. I am Counting on your support, to help your self and all of us. So get writing! If we are succesful we will get a company that considers Our health and concerns, that we all will be able to subscribe to!

N.B "A smart grid will be set-up and smart meters rolled out, also feed-in tariff systems for electricity."
There will be a 'smart grid', 'feed -in tariff'. It means that the meter reading can be read remotely, energy use can be regulated by charging higher prices for peak-use periods, equipment can be remotely turned on-off by the energy providers, and that effectively we will be permanent subjected to the HF-EMR that will be used for these communications. They can charge what they want when they want.
Will we be able to opt out? What will it cost to opt-out?
I remain very concerned about the smart meter proposals.
