Our motability car is up for renewal/replacement soon, and as buying an old car is not an option with the scheme - and we cannot afford to buy a car ourselves - I need to find out which new cars have the least amount of techno-junk in them. Someone said a while back to us that German vehicles were the best; is this true?

As we wouldn't be interested in high-end models with luxury specifications, all the bluetooth, wi-fi, inbuilt satnav features will hopefully not be standard and can perhaps be disabled if necessary. Any help appreciated - we don't want to change the car we have as it's perfect for my condition, but sadly it is no longer manufactured in the UK.

Avoid these cars listed on the IEEE website
'Smarter Cars? There's an App for That'

"By turning your car into the largest mobile telecommunications device you own, automakers hope to keep you productive, connected, informed, and entertained"

http://spectrum.ieee.org/green-tech/advanced-cars/smarter-cars-theres-an-app-for-that /0

I get higher rate mobility DLA as a payment rather than as a Mobility car.
My car is 1990 registration, basic model, only 54,000 miles and 5,000 miles since an engine overhaul two years ago - so i hope it passes the MOT next month!

Good luck with your search!

You might try ringing the manufacturers and ask to be put through to the technical department. That is what we did when my husband got an almost new car about 4 years ago. I explained that i needed to have everything hard wired, because of electrosensitivity. As it happened the guy at Ford I spoke to had heard of ES.

OK - Things have moved on in the meantime but it still might be worth asking what is being put in and what can be removed or disabled.

Many thanks, ES! I shall look into it. We used to have a Ford, years ago, and that was one of the models/makes we had at the top of the list this time, both in terms of cost and past experience.

You want technical department not customer services!
Insist on technical department.

Avoid this one. High electric fields.

Thanks! We've already ruled out quite a few makes purely on the comfort/vibration aspects, then a lot more others on financial grounds, so I doubt we'll be too spoilt for choice.

I have a Pajero 4WD, and I began to get extreme pain in my left foot that was near the centre console, our cars are right hand drive, and I used a metre and found that 150 milli gauss is being emitted in that area.

How are you getting on with your search for a suitable car?

Hi ES, we were only just discussing yesterday what our first/best options might be. We still have a couple of months before needing to reach a decision, but I want to start testing out some in the next week or so if possible. The new Focus and the Mercedes A-Class are the ones at the top of my list, but there are lots of things to check out on any potential car (not least the electrics but also the dimensions and comfort).

I'll keep you posted. Apparently from next year, the Focus will come factory fitted with total wi-fi and bluetooth capability, so I'm hoping I can get in before then and have a 2011 model if possible. Although if not, I shall make enquiries about disabling/disconnecting that stuff.

Likewise any of the other cars I try.

Apparently the Japanese earthquakes and nuclear chaos has hampered Ford's ability to produce new petrol-based vehicles. That and the obsession with green energy and carbon emissions - funny how all the bogus sciences come together to cause yet more grief for us ES folk!

Now it's going to be a question of trying to get a suitable Focus before they go wi-fi for 2012.

Oh I missed this at the time...thanks, but sadly a car that size is far too small for my needs!

We're still working something out with Ford....but it'll come down to whether anything left in the car once they've removed various things still makes me ill or not.

Hello ES! Well thanks to the huge negative press about the Motability Scheme in the UK, our first-choice car (that had no wi-fi/bluetooth at all) was removed from the scheme. Nice eh? So we've had to settle for one which needed it to be disabled, but I won't know if it's okay for me until I use it. If it's no good, we will be out of pocket, and the better alternative car is no longer an option thanks to the Daily Mail and AOL.

Still, next year the Fords will have built-in wi-fi/EMR so we had to take the chance....

Hello EG,

What a shame that the wifi/bluetooth free car has been withdrawn by Motability.

I am using my DLA mobility allowance to keep my 20 year old basic model Ford Fiesta car insured and maintained [reconditioned engine 2 years ago - only 43,000 miles on clock - my car mechanic says it is a 'good runner'.

EG - Let us know how you get on with it when the garage has sorted you car out.

What a shame that the wifi/bluetooth free car has been withdrawn by Motability.

It was due to the advance payment amounts involved; both cars cost almost exactly the same in value (approx £17K), but one had an advance payment of nearly £4.5K! And now the ceiling is only about £2000. Ridiculous situation, really...the dealers set these prices according to some formula or other based on resale values.

I looked at the Motability website and was shocked by how much was needed as an advance payment.
Keep us updated on your progress with your car please.

So far, whatever has been done to the vehicle (in terms of disabling bluetooth or potential EMFs) has not worked. I tried the car at the weekend and still got all the usual symptoms down the side of my body nearest the control centre. The effects took over 12 hours to die down.

Therefore the car as it is is currently of no use to us, so we just have to see what happens next.

Just to update: the car has gone back, the contract cancelled and we are no longer able to have a Motability Car because of this obsession with putting bluetooth/wi-fi in every new vehicle. Plus, obviously, the new changes to the limit for advance payments at £2000, at a stroke removing what few cars might still be bluetooth/wi-fi free.

Well what do you know eh.

I can't understand how or why they were ever allowed to become so "integrated" into the car and the "driving experience" in the first place. If talking on the phone is outlawed on grounds of safety, then having what amounts to a complete entertainment and social networking system in operation while you drive must be several times worse. 26,000 accidents caused by this nonsense is 26,000 too many and 26,000 which could have been easily avoided.

Greed eventually has to give way to common sense...surely?

Hi,

I have had extreme issues with our cars, and at times I have thought someone has got to them and made them so, but the electronic and electrical fields in my 2000 4WD Pajero, 2009 Toyota Corolla, and 2011 Nissan Micra are loaded with every conceivable EMR and EMF emissions that are unimaginable.

I refuse Bluetooth, but with all the electrical cabling throughout the cars and the computer, you can't escape from these forms of radiation.

Regards

Indeed Henrik,

Cars all around you with Internet. Lorries /Buses likewise?

When the ignition is turned off in the 5 cars left on the neighbours' driveway will the devices in the cars still transmit 24/7 adding even more to the pollution?

Indeed. Absolute madness. The EMR coming off these new buses with wi-fi is horrendous. And that's from sitting behind one in your own car.
