Is one coating of paint enough of yshield paint to block out AM and FM signals?

Hi deadmanish,

According to the YShield paint data (see their website) the shielding seems to be rather uniform over the frequency range of 30MHz to 18GHz.

I'm assuming that with "FM" and "AM" you mean signals in the AM & FM radio bands? The paint will block the FM radio band which is usually around 80-100 MHz. Contact YShield for info on shielding performance of kHz frequencies (AM radio band).

One layer of YShield has an attenuation of 37 dB (99.980 %) and two layers give a little bit more 44 dB (99.996 %).
What I usually do is I measure before screening, then paint one layer, let it dry properly (all water needs to evaporate) and then I measure the attenuation. If a strong source of radiation is close to a painted wall then I give it an extra layer.

Yes, always let each coat of paint dry thoroughly.

does the paint have to be grounded to be able to use?

No it does Not Have to but it makes it more active.
If you live in the UK you can earth it with a redundant electrical wall plug, earth only
Or elsewhere if you have a 3 pin plug
Ground floor, easier, earth it to outside with by connecting to a rod stuck deep in to the soil outside
Best regards
Agnes
P.S.we..can tell you how

deadmanish,

Earthing of YShield is not required to block radiofrequency signals (FM at least). The grounding prevents ELF (power-frequency) fields, coming from internal wiring, from coupling to the paint and propagating. Remember to leave a border without paint of 3-5 cm around wall sockets and switches.

I always ground YShield painted walls just to be sure.

Henrik,

Even if you do not ground will the paint still block emf?

deadmanish,

Yshield paint without grounding will still block radiofrequency fields. Once the paint is completely dry and all the water is evaporated, it is shielding.
I always, however, ground the paint, due to the reasons mentioned in my previous post.

If you are in doubt, please contact YShield ( info {-at-} yshield.com )

how much protection will the paint provide without being grounded and also what is the difference between the hsf54 and hsf57 paint?

Henrik,
Why do ypu recommend to leave a border without paint of 3-5 cm around wall sockets ? On YShield site i didn;t see this recommandation?

Thanks
