Hello,
I live in a 2nd floor rental apartment and I would like to shield the floors but I am not sure how. The apartment has carpet installed everywhere except in the bathroom and the kitchen where vinyl flooring is installed.

Do you have any ideas how to shield the floors from RF radiation?

yiako,

First, have a look at the shielding FAQ, here (link).

Personally, I've had good results in screening floor under carpet with cheap 1.5mm metal mesh. Some stores trade it as "insect net" or "voilere net". It has to be metal and it mustn't be covered in plastic or any insulating layer, as layers must overlap at least 5cm and have good electric contact.

With one layer of mesh, I've measured a 99,91% reduction and with two layers: 99,96%
Test was done with a cordless DECT phone. Wi-Fi will be similar.

Thanks for your reply Henrik.

The reduction you mention is quite good. I do have a few questions

1) Did you also measure reduction in radiation from nearby mobile phone masts?
2) Did you have to install new carpet after fitting the insect net or did you use the same carpet?
3) Did you ground the insect net and if so how?

Many thanks

yiako,

1). No. Aren't any nearby mobile phone masts. I used a known source (DECT) and a fixed distance (1m).

2). Used the same carpet. Moved furniture onto one half of floor, rolled free carpet up, applied net onto bare floor, rolled carpet back, moved furniture again and did other half same way.

3). I've prepared for grounding, but haven't needed it yet. Both RF and ELF measurements show its good. If I need to ground the net at some point I'll run a wire to a grounding rod. If you're on 2nd floor you can either get ground connection through electricity socket ground-pin (if your sockets have that) or get a usually-good-enough ground by attaching to bare metal of water pipe.
