Manmade Electromagnetic Fields and Oxidative Stress - Biological Effects and Consequences for Health
Switzerland Created: 9 Apr 2021
Abstract: Concomitant with the ever-expanding use of electrical appliances and mobile communication systems, public and occupational exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF) in the extremely-low-frequency and radiofrequency range has become a widely debated environmental risk factor for health.

Radiofrequency (RF) EMF and extremely-low-frequency (ELF) MF have been classified as possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B) by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).

The production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), potentially leading to cellular or systemic oxidative stress, was frequently found to be influenced by EMF exposure in animals and cells.

In this review, we summarize key experimental findings on oxidative stress related to EMF exposure from animal and cell studies of the last decade.

The observations are discussed in the context of molecular mechanisms and functionalities relevant to health such as neurological function, genome stability, immune response, and reproduction.

Most animal and many cell studies showed increased oxidative stress caused by RF-EMF and ELF-MF. In order to estimate the risk for human health by manmade exposure, experimental studies in humans and epidemiological studies need to be considered as well.

Doctors for the Environment: Press Release on 5G and the New Regulations for Adaptive Antennas
Switzerland Created: 8 Mar 2021
5G - New regulations for adaptive antennas - An increase of the limit values by a roundabout way as a mere detail of execution.

Press Release, Médecins en faveur de l’Environnement (MfE), 24 February 2021 -

Unofficial translation *

For years, MfE has been fighting, with the help of its expertise, against a relaxation of the limit values for cell phone radiation, for lower limit values and stricter protection of emissions. The MfE, as a representative of the interests of protection, is a member of the Non-ionizing Radiation Implementation Support Group that prepared the new regulations. The MfE rejects the new existing regulations for adaptive antennas because preservation of the level of protection is not guaranteed. There are currently excellent alternatives from a technical point of view.

For the operating mode of adaptive antennas that can be used for the 5G network as well as for the existing 4G (LTE) network, it is no longer the maximum transmission power that is valid. Temporarily, antennas in adaptive mode may exceed, depending on their type, more than ten times the permitted transmission power and even more. What's new is that the limit value must be determined in 6 minutes. This includes an increase of the limit values by one diverted channel. The limit values remain intact - as stated by DETEC in its press release of 23/02/2021 [in French, German, Italian]- and "the current level of protection is maintained". We do not share this opinion.

The rationale for the increase in peak values of adaptive antennas is based on simulation studies, unique test measurements and calculation bases that do not in any way satisfy the evolution of the cell phone sector. There is no evidence that the level of protection of the local residents is maintained. Exposure of local residents due to adaptive antennas is, over time, highly dynamic with powerful spikes, is user-dependent and can barely be monitored. This dynamic is, as far as its repercussions on man and the environment, unexplored until now and has been passed over in silence.

More radiation

The current regulations not only allow adaptive antennas to be more flexible in terms of the level of protection for people living near antennas. Cell phone users are unnecessarily exposed to radiation inside buildings when they use the coverage via antennas located outside. Now the cell phone is radiating much more as it connects via the external antenna in question. As a doctor, such an increase in radiation exposure is a health risk and is unacceptable, given the current state of knowledge.

Consistent prevention in mobile telephony - as little radiation as possible

More and more studies are proving that radiation exposure is harmful to health. Due to new and disturbing studies, the Advisory Committee of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) pleaded, in April 2019, for them to evaluate again, as a high priority, the cancer risk of mobile telephony radiation. In addition to the open questions related to the cancer risk, the impact on well-being, electrosensitivity, cognition and reproduction is the subject of debate. In its position paper on the limit values in force in 2020, the group of NIR advisory experts of the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) finds uncertainties and continues to recommend the systematic application of the precautionary principle. The epidemiological studies on the long-term effects of radiation exposure due to conventional cell phone installations above 1 V/m are insufficient. In studies carried out on animals and cells, mobile phone radiation shows a relatively consistent increase in oxidative stress. The special edition of the BERENIS newsletter of January 2021 now contains a brief summary of an expert report commissioned by the FOEN and soon to be published, a current assessment on a possible relationship between oxidative stress and exposure to magnetic and electromagnetic fields and its effects on health. The majority of animal studies and more than half of the studies performed on cells show signs of increased oxidative stress, also in the range of the limit values for mobile telephony. This is worrisome from a medical point of view and especially for the more vulnerable among us: fetuses, children, pregnant women, the sick and elderly people. We reject any increase in limit values and demand systematic health care prevention as a general condition for the further development of mobile telephony.

Alternatives

70 percent of the mobile data volume is used for indoor coverage - especially for streaming; and the trend is upward. The capacity gained through the new regulations will soon be exhausted. It is high time to plan a network adapted to the requirements of the future. ECOSCOPE 2/19 described in detail a blueprint for low radiation mobile telephony [in German], which we, the MfE, have presented as a possible concept in the context of future developments in the Mobile Telephony and Outreach Report. We expect Parliament to defend, without reservation, the interests of public protection, challenge the new regulations and commit to measures that we can use to improve the quality of life of our citizens that will lead to mobile telephony radiation exposure that is respectful of health.

Special report: oxidative-stress from non-thermal wireless exposure linked to health damages
Switzerland Created: 25 Jan 2021
This special issue of the BERENIS newsletter contains an up-to-date assessment of a possible correlation between oxidative stress and exposure to magnetic and electromagnetic fields and their putative effects on health. For this purpose, relevant animal and cell studies published between 2010 and 2020 were identified and summarized. An extended report presenting these recent studies in more detail will be published soon by the FOEN. This special issue contains a short version of the report.

Conclusions:
In summary, the majority of the animal and more than half of the cell studies provided evidence of increased oxidative stress caused by RF-EMF or ELF-MF. This notion is based on observations in a large number of cell types, applying different exposure times and dosages (SAR or field strengths), also in the range of the regulatory limits. Certainly, some studies are burdened with methodological uncertainties and weaknesses or are not very comprehensive in terms of exposure time, dose, number and quantitative analysis of the biomarkers used, to name a few. Taking these methodological weaknesses into account, nonetheless, a tendency becomes apparent, namely that EMF exposure, even in the low dose range, can lead to changes in oxidative balance. Organisms and cells are generally able to react to oxidative stress, and many studies showed adaptation to EMF exposure after a recovery phase. Pre-existing conditions, such as immune deficiencies or diseases (diabetes, neurodegenerative diseases), compromise the body's defence mechanisms, including antioxidative protection, and it is therefore possible that individuals with these conditions experience more severe health effects. In addition, the studies show that very young and elderly individuals can react less efficiently to oxidative stress induced by EMF, which of course also applies to other stressors that cause oxidative stress. More extensive studies under standardised conditions are necessary, to better understand and confirm these phenomena and observations.

BREAKING: Switzerland halts rollout of 5G over health concerns
Switzerland Created: 12 Feb 2020
Switzerland, one of the world’s leaders in the rollout of 5G mobile technology, has placed an indefinite moratorium on the use of its new network because of health concerns.

The move comes as countries elsewhere around Europe race to upgrade their networks to 5G standards amid a furious rearguard diplomatic campaign by the US to stop them using Chinese technology provided by Huawei. Washington says the company, which is fundamental to most European networks’ upgrade plans, presents a grave security risk.

Switzerland is relatively advanced in Europe in adopting 5G. The wealthy alpine country has built more than 2,000 antennas to upgrade its network in the last year alone, and its telecoms providers have been promising their customers’ imminent 5G coverage for most of the past year.

However, a letter sent by the Swiss environment agency, Bafu, to the country’s cantonal governments at the end of January, has now in effect called time on the use of all new 5G towers, officials who have seen the letter told the Financial Times.

The agency is responsible for providing the cantons with safety criteria against which telecoms operators’ radiation emissions can be judged. Under Switzerland’s highly federalised structure, telecoms infrastructure is monitored for compliance and licensed by cantonal authorities, but Bern is responsible for setting the framework.

Bafu has said it cannot yet provide universal criteria without further testing of the impact of 5G radiation.

The agency said it was “not aware of any standard worldwide” that could be used to benchmark recommendations. “Therefore Bafu will examine exposure through adaptive [5G] antennas in depth, if possible in real-world operational conditions. This work will take some time,” it said.

Without the criteria, cantons are left with little option but to license 5G infrastructure according to existing guidelines on radiation exposure, which all but preclude the use of 5G except in a tiny minority of cases.

Several cantons have already imposed their own voluntary moratoria because of uncertainty over health risks.

Swiss law on the effects of radiation from telecoms masts is broadly in line with that of European peers, but specifies the application of more stringent precautionary measures in certain cases. New 5G communications technology means individuals are exposed to more concentrated beams of non-ionising radiation, but for shorter periods. Bafu must determine which legal standards to apply to this.

Swisscom, the country’s largest mobile operator, said it understood “the fears that are often expressed about new technologies”.

“There is no evidence that antenna radiation within the limit values adversely affects human health,” the company added, pointing out that 5G is run on frequencies similar to the current 4G standard, which has been subject to “several thousand studies.”

The company said Switzerland’s regulatory limits were “10 times stricter than those recommended by the World Health Organization in places where people stay for longer periods of time”.

Switzerland already has a notable anti-5G lobby, with recent protests against its rollout in Bern, Zurich and Geneva.

The Swiss Medical Association has advised caution on 5G, arguing that the most stringent legal principles should be applied because of unanswered questions about the technology’s potential to cause damage to the nervous system, or even cancers.

Five “popular initiatives” — proposals for legally binding referendums on 5G use — are already in motion in Switzerland. Two have already been formalised and are in the process of collecting the 100,000 signatures needed to trigger nationwide votes that if successful will amend Switzerland’s constitution.

One will make telecoms companies legally liable for claims of bodily damage caused by radiation from masts unless they can prove otherwise. The other proposes strict and stringent limits on radiation emissions from masts and will give local residents veto power over all new constructions in their area.

Thousands of Swiss protest 5G wireless over health fears
Switzerland Created: 26 Sep 2019
Thousands of people protested in the Swiss capital Bern Saturday over the roll-out of a 5G wireless technology across the country, which they fear could damage people's health.

The protesters, many carrying placards, gathered in front of the Swiss parliament building, in a bid to stop the construction of more 5G-compatible antennae.

"The fact that so many people turned out today is a strong sign against the uncontrolled introduction of 5G," said Tamlin Schibler Ulmann, co-president of Frequencia, the group that organised the rally.

The tiny principality of Monaco became the first country in Europe to inaugurate a 5G mobile phone network in July based on technology from Chinese firm Huawei, which is seen by the US as a major security risk.

But critics in Switzerland argue that the electromagnetic radiation the new system emits poses unprecedented health and environmental risks compared to previous generations of mobile technology.

Online petitions have helped persuade several Swiss cantons -- in Geneva, Vaud, Fribourg and Neuchatel -- to postpone the construction of antennae as a precaution.

The Swiss Federation of Doctors (FMH) has also argued for a cautious approach to the new technology.

Opponents of the new technology are trying to gather the 100,000 signatures they need to force a referendum on imposing a moratorium on the technology until its risks can be properly assessed.

In February, Switzerland attributed 5G frequencies to three major operators, Swisscom, Sunrise and Salt, and the operators have been pushing the cutting-edge technology in television advertisements and on billboards.

By early July, 334 antennae stations for 5G were operational across the country, authorities have told AFP.

There are several studies on the health impacts of the new technology underway, including one by the World Health Organization, which has told AFP it had begun "conducting a risk assessment of health outcomes from radiofrequency fields exposure".

A group of experts was also appointed by the Swiss government last year to probe the risks involved with introducing 5G, and their findings should be published by the end of the year.

Health fears prompt Swiss 5G revolt
Switzerland Created: 19 Sep 2019
Switzerland was among the first countries to begin deploying 5G, but health fears over radiation from the antennas that carry the next-generation mobile technology have sparked a nationwide revolt.

Demonstrators against the technology are due to fill the streets of Bern later this month, but already a number of cantons have been pressured to put planned constructions of 5G-compatible antennae on ice.

The technology has been swept up in the deepening trade war between China and the United States, which has tried to rein in Chinese giant Huawei -- the world's leader in superfast 5G equipment -- over fears it will allow Beijing to spy on communications from countries that use its products and services.

But far from the clash of the titans, a growing number of Swiss are voicing alarm at possible health effects from exposure to the electromagnetic rays radiating from the new antennae, and are threatening to put the issue to a referendum in the country famous for its direct democratic system.

It wasn't supposed to be this way.

In February, Switzerland took a big step towards deployment when it attributed 5G frequencies to three major operators, Swisscom, Sunrise and Salt, allowing the country to rake in revenues of nearly 380 million Swiss francs ($384 million, 350 million euros).

High on their success, the operators raced to trumpet on television advertisements and billboards that the cutting-edge technology would be available this year in cities, in the countryside and even in mountainous regions.

By early July, 334 antennae stations for 5G were operational across the country, authorities told AFP.

- Referendum? -
But the rollout has run into some serious hurdles.

Several cantons including Geneva have buckled to pressure from online petitioners demanding a halt to construction of the 5G infrastructure.

But while no new antennae are being built in parts of the country, the operators are still converting existing 4G antennae for 5G use -- something they can do without authorisation.

National carrier Swisscom thus says it expects 90 percent of the population to have 5G access by the end of the year.

Opponents meanwhile warn that 5G poses unprecedented health and environmental risks compared to previous generations of mobile technology, and are urging authorities to place a full-fledged moratorium on the rollout.

They will organise a large protest on September 21 in front of the government buildings in Bern, and are also working towards putting the issue to a popular vote.

"I think we have most citizens on our side," Coco Tache-Berther, of the organisation Fequencia, told AFP, saying Switzerland's rapid roll-out of 5G was "ultra-shocking".

Olivier Pahud, who regularly demonstrates against 5G in front of the UN in Geneva, agreed, insisting the technology will have "impacts on health, on the environment, on people's capacity to think."

And for people like him, who suffer from "electromagnetic hypersensitivity", the new technology will be devastating, he said.

The condition is not recognised as a medical disorder in most countries, but sufferers insist that exposure to mobile phones, wifi routers, televisions and other gadgets cause them anything from mild discomfort to life-ruining disability.

The powerful Swiss Federation of Doctors is also urging caution, maintaining that "as long as there is no scientific proof that raising the radiation limits will not impact health, one must refrain from raising them."

- Noxious effect? -
In Geneva, it is Daniel Buchs, a doctor and a regional parliamentarian with the centrist Christian Democratic Party, who is leading the battle.

"We are waiting for a serious, independent study that shows whether, yes or no, 5G has a noxious effect for the population," he told AFP.

Such a study, he insisted, could help avoid a health scandal similar to the one the world has seen with asbestos, which was long touted as safe but which today is known to kill at least 107,000 people around the world each year.

There are already several studies underway, including one by the World Health Organization, which told AFP it had begun "conducting a risk assessment of health outcomes from radiofrequency fields exposure."

A group of experts was also appointed by the Swiss government last year to probe the risks involved with introducing 5G, and their findings should be published by the end of the year.

That study had originally been scheduled for publication during the first half of the year.

The delay, which the government said was linked to "the size of the task", has sparked outrage among 5G opponents, who suspect pressure from operators might have played a role.

"You really have to ask yourself what is behind this," Tache-Berther said.

The First Report of 5G Injury from Switzerland
Switzerland Created: 22 Jul 2019
The first reported injury of 5G in a news report comes from Switzerland, where 5G has been launched in 102 locations.

The weekly French-language Swiss magazine L’Illustré interviewed people living in Geneva after the 5G rollout with alarming details of illness. In their article, With 5G, We Feel Like Guinea Pigs, posted July 18, 2019, they report neighbors met to discuss their many common symptoms and many unanswered questions.

5G: Its Legal but Not Safe

As soon as the antennas were installed, several residents and entire families in the heart of Geneva reported similar unusual symptoms of loud ringing in the ear, intense headaches, unbearable earaches, insomnia, chest pain, fatigue and not feeling well in the house. 29-year-old Geneva resident, Johan Perruchoud, called up Swisscom and was told that indeed the 5G cell towers were activated on the same day he began to feel the symptoms. When others called Swisscom they were told everything is legal and within guidelines.

Swiss Physician Denounces 5G and Calls for a 5G Moratorium

Dr. Bertrand Buchs, who has also called for a 5G moratorium, states he has seen more and more patients with similar symptoms. He notes, “In this case, our authorities are going against common sense … we risk experiencing a catastrophe in a few years… no serious study exists yet, which is not surprising when we know that this technology was developed in China, then to the United States. In Switzerland, we could open a line for people who feel bad, listen to these complaints and examine them. Our country has the means and the skills. The debate must be launched because the story is not about to end.”
Swisscom: Millions of Fast Connections

Swisscom states, “5G will create new opportunities for residential customers and businesses across Switzerland. 5G is the new mobile communication standard for digitisation, enabling the extremely fast connection of millions of devices, things and people.” Will those millions of fast connection enable communication, or instead disable people from communicating due to illness?

Dear Diary: Loud Humming, Lots of Pain, Nausea, No Sleep

These stories parallel that of Anne Mills, author of “All EMF’d Up”, who suffered wireless radiation poisoning in Germany when her husband was stationed there for work. She wrote a diary with identical symptoms of those in Geneva. As noted in the Swiss magazine L’Illustré article, her concerns, like those in Geneva, were dismissed. She consulted with German physician, Dr Horst Eger, to confirm her symptoms were that of microwave illness seen in military radar personnel and those working on microwave towers. All EMFd Up (Electromagnetic Fields): My Journey Through Wireless Radiation Poisoning and How You Can Protect Yourself. (2019)Anne Mills

“Mystery Illness” In Cuban and Chinese Diplomats is Microwave Poisoning

The New York Times and CBS reported unexplained symptoms in diplomats living in China and Cuba in 2017 and 2018. The source was found to be microwave radiation. UC San Diego Professor of Medicine, Dr. Beatrice Golomb, published an article in Neural Computation in September 2018, discussing the symptoms of the diplomats living abroad. The symptoms that diplomats and their families experienced, i.e. sleep problems, headaches, strange auditory sounds, anxiety and dizziness were similar to those with microwave illness reported in military studies from pulsed microwave radiation. See Cuban Diplomats Likely Hit by Microwave Weapons.
Many Others Suffer Microwave Illness/Electrosensitivity

It is reported that 3% to 30% of the population have symptoms similar to Microwave illness or electrosensitivity, depending on the country and if mild to severe symptoms are reported.

Dr. Scott Eberle describes how a physician learned about his own electrosensitivity published originally in 2014 in the Sonoma Medicine and later reprinted in the Santa Clara County/Monterey County Medical Association Bulletin. Canton of Geneva prohibits construction of 5G antennae
Switzerland Created: 18 Apr 2019
The Canton of Geneva has introduced a preliminary ban on the construction of 5G antennae, reported SRF.ch. The cantonal parliament first requires investigations into possible health implications. The decision on the moratorium came in at 58 votes against 28.

The prohibition will only be lifted again if independent scientific findings are available on the possible health effects of 5G. The Geneva government will now turn to the World Health Organisation (WHO) and request independent studies.

In Geneva's Grand Council, it was argued that many mobile operators would explain to consumers that 5G is the same as LTE. However, the environment is increasingly burdened by electromagnetic waves and nobody knows about the health effects. The cantonal parliament also wants to know about the effects on animals.

By the end of the year, Swisscom plans to cover more than 90 percent of Switzerland with a 5G network. Sunrise has been covering 150 cities and locations throughout Switzerland since the beginning of April. With the award of the 5G licences at the beginning of February, the discussion about the health risks of mobile radiation in Switzerland has been resumed.

5G: Vaud (Switzerland) Adopts Resolution for a Moratorium & more to follow
Switzerland Created: 10 Apr 2019
After several twists, the Vaud Cantonal Parliament (Grand Council Vaudois) adopted Tuesday a resolution calling for a moratorium on 5G antennas. The measure should apply until it receives the report of the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment on this new technology.

After a long debate, obfuscated by the intervention of the Swiss State Councellor Jacqueline de Quattro, the Vaud Parliamentary representatives said “yes” to the resolution tabled by the Environmentalist “Green” Party Raphael Mahaim by 95 votes for the motion against 9 against it and 25 abstentions. However, they amended the text by establishing a clear timeframe.
The Amended Text

The Green representative wanted the moratorium to apply “at a minimum” until the conclusions of the study of the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment. A large majority of Parliamentarians, however, preferred a more precise wording on the future, saying it is necessary to wait until the conclusions of the report.

In his speech, Raphael Mahaim emphasized that the announced arrival of 5G was completely lacking planning or coordination. All this does not respect in any way the “the Helvetic tradition of the as it should be“.

Note from TBYP Editor: Earlier today, Raphael Mahaim has stated on Facebook (translated): “In response to the parliamentary resolution from the Swiss Environmentalists (the Swiss ‘Green’) calling for a moratorium on 5G antennas, the Swiss Grand Council has voted a few minutes ago, and the Swiss State Council announced the suspension of permits issued by the State of Vaud. This is excellent news that puts the canton of Vaud at the forefront of this citizen reaction!!!! The work carried out in recent weeks by the Vaudois Greens is paying off”
Caution and Consideration

Over fears, uncertainties, pressures from certain business circles, Raphaël Mahaim asked for caution and consideration. Most importantly, to wait for independent analysis of the impacts of 5G on health as well as on nature and society, including levels of electricity consumption.

The Head of the Liberal-Radical Parliamentarians, Marc-Olivier Buffat, denounced in those points the wish of the Environmentalist to “surf on fear and concern” in order to boost with “disaster-mongering” his campaign for the federal election this fall. According to Buffat, the standards on emissions are already much more strict in Switzerland than anywhere else in Europe.
The Issue of Trust

For the representatives who spoke, the precautionary principle is appropriate, without technophobia. We must wait for the conclusions of the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment on 5G. “You have to trust scientists,” said Jean Tschopp, for example.

For the representatives of the radical left, it is nevertheless imperative to keep having concerns about the scientific expertise, as expressed Jean-Michel Dolivo. “No to blind faith,” he said, pointing to the pressures from the business community that he believes can capture scientists.
Confusion

The debate on the 5G antennas became somewhat confusing when Swiss State Councellor Jacqueline de Quattro made her address. She announced that the Swiss Council of State had decided on a moratorium. In agreeing to support the amended resolution, “you are going in the same direction as the government”, she continued.

Absent at the beginning of the debate, the Swiss State Councellor arrived only after being asked to via messages, she said. Her colleague Pierre-Yves Maillard, who is in charge of health, should have answered questions from the Parlementarians, but in the end did not express himself on this subject.
Clarifications

At 1 p.m., however, the Swiss Council of State issued a note to the press to “clarify” the words of Jacqueline de Quattro. “The Swiss Council of State did not take a decision on the authorizations to build 5G antennas and there is therefore no moratorium to date on the questions of these authorizations.” The Swiss Council of State emphasized that its current position is “only, in accordance with the precaution principle, to hold the files relating to the 5G antennas pending the technical guidelines of the Confederation”.
