Minister urged to speed up cell tower removals
Trinidad Created: 27 May 2007
THE ASSOCIATION for Radio Frequency Emission Control in Trinidad and Tobago (ArFECTT) said it welcomes the withdrawal of the injunction and judicial review action brought by Digicel against the Ministry of Planning and Development and the subsequent removal, of a cellular tower located at Petite Bourg.

However, the group said it remains concerned that in most cases despite objections and protest action by residents, cellular towers continue to be erected by Digicel and TSTT.

ArFECTT said it is also concerned about the inability of the Ministry of Planning and Development “to effectively treat with this issue thus far” and is calling on Planning Minister Camille Robinson-Regis to ensure that all such towers are removed within the shortest possible time frame.

ArFECTT said it condemned “in the strongest possible terms” the behaviour of Digicel workmen on the site of the cell tower removal in Petit Bourg on Friday.

“Needless to say our association is taking this matter very seriously and is therefore calling on Digicel to issue a public apology... for the uncivilised and barbaric conduct exhibited by their workers,” the group said .
