EU wants full data-retention: is this the secret reason for masts everywhere?
Belgium Created: 26 Aug 2005
A new directive from the EU-commission to be published next month is set to clear the way for full retention of all telecommunication data, effectively turning mobile-phones into tracking devices with 100 square meter accuracy. As mobile-phones announce themselves to basestations (masts) in the vicinity, then the tracking of everyone, everywhere will now be possible.

Police already have access to information from telecom's about locations in which suspects have had mobile-phone conversations but with the upcoming directive Police can track a person, without having to prove suspicion, anywhere as long as the mobile-phone is switched on.

EDRI, the "Digital Civil Rights in Europe" group has started a petition against the EU data-retention directive.
