Nepal Telecom To Triple Kathmandu Base Stations
Nepal Created: 3 Jan 2008
Nepal Telecom (NT) says that it plans to triple the number of Base Stations in the Kathmandu Valley in response to its subscribers' growing complaints about poor mobile phone connections. A senior NT official told the eKantipur newspaper that once the new equipment was set up, it would be bye bye to current annoyances like busy network, line drops and interrupted conversations.

“It will take nearly six months to complete the installation. Once it is done, our subscribers will enjoy problem-free service,” said Buddhi Acharya, manager of the Mobile Service Directorate. He added though that the company is having difficulty finding the 500 properties it needs to be able to rent space from for the base station equipment to be sited.

There are currently 252 base stations in operation in the valley and Nepal Telecom plans to increase their number to 700 within six months.

Nepal Telecom's network in the Kathmandu Valley can currently support some 900,000 subscribers. China's ZTE is working to increase this to 1.5 million lines and Huawei is due to add a further 100,000 lines at the same time.

Nepal currently has two mobile operators - Nepal Telecom and Spice Nepal. According to figures from the Mobile World service, the two networks are roughly equal in subscriber numbers, although Spice Nepal is a much younger network. The country has a population of 29 million, but only 1.6 million have mobile phone subscriptions - equating to a population penetration level of 5.6% at the end of last September.
