Residents angry over phone mast plan
United Kingdom Created: 2 Jun 2008
Campaigning residents are furious at plans for a giant phone mast within the grounds of a Lancashire charity.
Mobile firm O2 wants to erect the 25m mast in the grounds of Galloway's Society for the Blind's headquarters in Howick Park Avenue, Penwortham.
The lattice mast would feature six antennae and two transmission dishes. Equipment cabinets would also be installed along with security fencing to protect the compound.

But local people are furious at the proposals and are circulating a petition against the planning application.

Penny Downer, who lives in Howick Park Avenue, said: "No-one is happy about this. People are up in arms and it's not right for the area. There are a lot of children living here and no-one knows what the health risks might be.

"It's not as if O2 needs another mast. The signal is very good around here."

Phillip Howard, who lives in nearby Stanley Grove, said: "It's going to have a real impact on the area.

"The mast will totally dominate the surroundings."

Now local people are hoping councillors in the Howick and Priory ward will call in the application – meaning permission will only be granted if South Ribble Council's planning committee agrees.

But bosses at the 140-year-old charity said they wanted the mast on their land for the rental income.

Stuart Eastwood, who is in charge of finance at Galloway's, said: "They are hoping to put it on land at the bottom of a field.

"By putting it on our property we will generate an extra source of income."
