Parents vow to remove children if Formby school put in wireless laptops
United Kingdom Created: 21 Oct 2009
PARENTS have vowed to take their children out of Woodlands Primary School after plans to install Wi-Fi laptops.

They fear their children’s health due to exposure to emissions throughout the day from the 50 new wireless laptops.

A petition, signed by 32 parents, has been launched against the installation of the laptops, which are set to be installed in the next week during half term.

Phil Hughes, 58, a homeopath, selected Woodlands Primary School for his daughter Serena, nine, because there are no mobile phone masts nearby.

He said he will take his daughter out of the school if the Wi-Fi is installed.

Mr Hughes is calling for a meeting to be held with parents before the decision is made to install Wi-Fi laptops.

He said: “We have evidence in our possession that shows there are levels of danger with Wi-Fi to biology and DNA of children.

“We wanted a meeting to put our case to the parents. You can’t make a decision if you haven’t got all of the information. Parents should at least be informed.”

Andrea O’Shaughnessy, 39, and her husband William, 35, are determined to take their two children out of the school and want laptops to be hardwired instead.

She said: “Me and William have decided that we will take them out if the Wi-Fi does go in.

“Wi-Fi emits radiation and my fear is they would be around that for six hours a day whether it is low level or not. It could be ten years time, when they get a brain tumour or some kind of cancer. They put asbestos in schools years ago and said it was safe and it is only just coming out now that it’s not safe.

“It’s going in without any consultation.”

Mr O’Shaughnessy wrote a letter to headteacher Simon Grilli in September calling for a consultation meeting to be held with parents.

However just governors and staff met on October 1 and a letter was sent out to parents on October 14 telling them the laptops were being installed.

Mr Grilli, headteacher, said: “Naturally, I am very disappointed at the prospect of parents taking their children out of school.

“The Governors and I spent considerable time at a Full Governing Body meeting on October 1,scrutinising the articles sent in by the two parents and considered their points and opinions. The Governors and I ultimately accepted the assurances of the Health Protection Agency, BECTA and the view of the local authority. All parents received a long letter outlining the Governors review, with a request that any parent who had continuing concerns to contact the chair of Governors immediately.

“No one to date has contacted him.”

On July 13, guidance by the Health Protection Agency, stated: “On the basis of the studies so far carried out in house, the HPA sees no reason why Wi-Fi should not continue to be used in schools.

“However with any new technology it is a sensible precautionary approach, as happened with mobile phones, to keep the situation under ongoing review so that parents and others can have as much reassurance as possible.”
