Glen phone mast taken down | |
United Kingdom | Created: 22 Feb 2006 |
RESIDENTS from the Glen area outside Newry were celebrating yesterday after a five-year campaign to have a mobile-phone mast removed ended in the 80-foot structure being taken down. The mast, located in a field off the School Road, Glen, has been at the centre of an ongoing dispute between residents of the area and mobile phone giants T-Mobile. Residents branded the mast "unsightly" and a "health hazard" in their opposition to the structure, and now it has been stripped down with plans to erect it in the vicinity of Tinker Hill on the Belfast Road. Anne Rice, who has been campaigning for the removal of the mast since 2000, said she was "absolutely thrilled" with yesterday's proceedings. "It's marvellous news," she told the Democrat. "We have been waiting for this day for ages and thought it was never going to happen, but it has now and it's absolutely brilliant." South Down MLA PJ Bradley also welcomed the move and praised everyone involved for their sterling and continued efforts in opposing the mast. "I'm delighted for everyone involved," he said. "This issue has been ongoing since 2000 and I think the mobile phone operators could have handled the situation a lot better. "The operators are moving the mast to an alternative, non-controversial site near Tinker Hill as a result of some very powerful lobbying by concerned residents and I'm delighted they have finally won their battle." T-Mobile yesterday confirmed that the mast was being re-located following a request from Newry and Mourne District Council. |
