The population of harbour seals has fallen by up to 90% since 2000.
Vodafone, the telecoms company, is providing lightweight marine tags for a 3 year Scottish Government backed project at Orkney Harbour.
Scientists from the Sea Mammal Research Unit (SMRU) at St. Andrews University will attach the tags.
Dr. Bernie McConnell, from the SMRU said; Data collected will help to assess causes, management and mitigation options in relation to the seals decline.
