Autumn Statement: Philip Hammond to pledge £1bn for better broadband
United Kingdom Created: 7 Mar 2017
More than £1billion is to be spent ensuring that millions of homes and businesses across the country have access to the “gold standard” of hyper-fast broadband, Philip Hammond will announce in the Autumn Statement.

The Chancellor will use Wednesday’s financial statement to announce a huge drive to improve broadband speeds following criticism of the Government’s high-speed internet roll out and concerns that Britain has fallen behind rival economies.

Mr Hammond will pledge that two million more homes and businesses could get “full-fibre” broadband, which has the capacity to reach speeds of more than 1Gbps.

It would allow users to download an entire television box-set in less than a minute.

Officials hope that by committing Government money into “full-fibre” broadband, existing providers will intensify the rollout of superfast broadband across the country, particularly in rural areas that have not yet been connected to high-speed internet.

The Autumn Statement announcement comes after The Daily Telegraph’s Better Broadband campaign to improve connectivity for homes in rural areas.
