IT'S TIME FOR PEOPLE TO TAKE ACTION AGAINST DIRTY ELECTRICITY: 'DIRTY' ELECTRICITY AT CENTER OF DEBATE
USA Created: 18 Dec 2006
Stray voltage health threat
Dear Editor: I'm sorry if letter writer Warren Buckles (June 6) had difficulty following the premises in my May 17 guest column.
For years, farmers have implicated poor power quality (dirty electricity) as a source of their problems, some of it carried by utility lines and some generated on-site.

The supposed experts at the university and the Public Service Commission have refused to study it (preferring to study "stray voltage"), even though
industry spends billions every year correcting the problem in industrial settings lest it damage equipment.

Levels of dirty electricity are often very high in urban environments. The utilities, government agencies and the university have adamantly refused to assess how these phenomena affect human health. The utilities could employ numerous methods to mitigate the problem, but have refused to do so. They could also clearly warn us of other risks associated with household appliances and devices, such as dimmer switches, but they don't. They have the authority to limit dirty electricity on their lines, but don't employ it.

It's time to let people assess electrical conditions for themselves and draw their own conclusions. It's pretty simple: The higher the levels of dirty
electricity in their environment, the worse they feel.
It's time we treated people as carefully as we treat equipment. And, no, the utilities, the PSC and university researchers cannot be trusted to accurately
measure electrical conditions, as farmers have found out over the decades.

There will be a public meeting featuring presentations by an industrial electrician who has measured electrical conditions in our environment for several
years and by a researcher who has found, among other benefits, a marked reduction in the insulin requirements of diabetics following the removal of
dirty electricity from the environment. The meeting will be at 7 p.m. July 27 at the Community Center in Fitchburg, 5510 Lacy Road.

We are asking that employees or representatives of the utilities refrain from disrupting the meeting and from trying to advance their theories on how results can't possibly be valid. They have ample opportunity to express their views at other venues and, indeed, have done so repeatedly.

Yes, there are numerous anecdotal accounts of the benefits of removing electrical pollution. These accounts clearly warrant further investigation by
researchers who are truly independent.

Dr. George Carlo responds to the Danish "xmas shopping mobile-phone re-assurance study"
USA Created: 9 Dec 2006
After a number of prominent, peer-reviewed studies indicating that cell phone radiation can cause genetic damage, brain and blood cell dysfunction and a host of health problems including cancer, now comes a Danish study that appears to say there is no danger at all. And, that is exactly what cell phone users want to hear – if it is true.

It’s Official: WHO´s Mike Repacholi Is An Industry Consultant,
USA Created: 30 Nov 2006
And He’s Already in Hot Water
Just months after leaving his post as the head of the EMF project at the World Health Organization (WHO), Mike Repacholi is now in business as an
industry consultant. The Connecticut Light and Power Co. (CL&P), a subsidiary of Northeast Utilities, and the United Illuminating Co. (UI) have hired Repacholi to help steer the Connecticut Siting Council away from a strict EMF exposure standard.
The siting council is in the process of revising the state’s EMF policies.
Last year, it hired its own industry consultant, Peter Valberg of the Gradient Corp., to review the current state of EMF health research. Valberg’s report, submitted in January, proposes a “screening level” of 100mG to protect against any adverse health effects “even in a hypothetically more sensitive sub-population”— that is, it would also protect young children.

Cell towers killing millions of birds
USA Created: 29 Nov 2006
WASHINGTON -- Is the pursuit of fewer dropped calls leading to more dropping birds?
The lights atop communications towers that warn pilots to stay away can have a come-hither effect on birds --
killing millions of migrating warblers, thrushes and other species every year.

During bad weather, birds can mistake tower lights for the stars they use to navigate. They will circle a tower trancelike, often until they crash into the
structure, its guy wires or other birds. Sometimes disoriented birds plummet to the ground from exhaustion.

The fatally hypnotic effect of warning beacons on birds is not a new phenomenon; early lighthouses attracted swarms of birds. But as towers proliferate to accommodate an ever-growing number of mobile phones and other devices, conservationists say bird deaths are climbing.

"We're talking about estimates of millions of birds dying because of these towers," said Paul Schmidt, assistant director for the migratory bird program at
the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which has pegged the annual deaths at 4 million to 50 million.

Precise numbers are elusive, because many of the approximately 105,000 lighted communications towers nationwide are in isolated areas. It's another example of the conflict between technology and nature -- a battle that has not gone well for migratory birds.
Along with losing their habitats to development, their flyways are increasingly mined with deadly windmills, power lines and confusing reflective-glass
skyscrapers.

Lacking definitive studies on birds and towers, the communications industry questions the wisdom of adding costly new regulations at a time when more towers are needed for expanding cellular phone service and high-definition TV and radio broadcasts.

"We don't want to be anti-conservation ... but you have to sort of balance that with this transition we're making to this next generation of technology,"
said Dennis Wharton, a spokesman for the National Association of Broadcasters.

Debate on that balance has begun in Washington.

Spurred by environmental groups, the Federal Communications Commission announced this month that it was considering new tower regulations.

The Men Who Knew Too Much?: NSA Wiretapping Whistleblowers Found Dead in Italy and Greece
USA Created: 8 Nov 2006
Adamo Bove and Costas Tsalikidis: Both uncovered a secret bugging system and both met untimely ends. Was That Just A Coincidence?
And Who Made Your Cell Phone?
Is someone murdering people who know too much about NSA wiretapping overseas?
Two whistleblowers — one in Italy, one in Greece — uncovered a secret bugging system installed in cell phones around the world. Both met with untimely ends. The resultant scandals have received little press in the United States, despite the profound implications for American critics of the Bush administration.

Last month, Italian telecommunications security expert Adamo Bove either leapt or was pushed from a freeway overpass; he left no note and had no history of depression. Last year (March, 2005), Greek telecommunications expert Costas Tsalikidis met with a similarly enigmatic end. Both had uncovered American attempts to eavesdrop on government officials, anti-war activists, and private businessmen.

The Bove case relates to the long-standing controversy over the CIA's kidnapping of cleric Abu Omar, who was flown to Egypt and tortured. The post-Berlusconi government of Italy is attempting to arrest and try all of the CIA personnel involved. Bove used mobile phone records to trace more than two dozen American agents.

Wi-Fi networks are sitting ducks for hackers
USA Created: 31 Oct 2006
Wireless network security researchers demonstrate ways to take over computer systems via flaws in wireless Wi-Fi connectivity.

In recent months, there has been an increase in public awareness around the severity of wireless driver flaws. At the August 2006 Black Hat Briefings in Las Vegas, researchers David Maynor and Jon Ellch showed off a new technique for breaking into computers via Wi-Fi driver vulnerabilities on Windows and Mac systems.

During the demonstration, the researchers were able to take complete control of a MacBook via a specific vulnerability in the device driver code that sits between the operating system and the wireless card.

Ellch, a well-known security expert who uses the hacker moniker "Johnny Cache," made it clear that the issue is not specific to Apple's Mac computers. "This isn't an Apple problem or a Microsoft problem. This is something that's problematic across the industry," he said.

Widely regarded as an authority on wireless security issues, Ellch believes the (Wi-Fi) 802.11 link-layer wireless protocol is an "overly complicated" protocol that has not been implemented securely by many vendors.

Some old news: Laptop Use Can Damage Male Fertility.
USA Created: 31 Oct 2006
Laptop Use Can Damage Male Fertility

Researchers at a New York university believe they've found evidence that laptop use of notebook computers by men can impair fertility.
Researchers at the State University of New York at Stony Brook showed that prolonged laptop use heated men's testicles on the order of 5 degrees Fahrenheit, within the 1.8 degree to 5.2 degree range found to impair the production of male sperm.
The test sample was relatively small—29 people, according to reports—
and the test subjects used an undisclosed Pentium 4-based laptop for an entire hour.
"We haven't yet seen the study, so we can't comment," a spokeswoman for Intel Corp., based in Santa Clara, Calif., said in an instant message to ExtremeTech.
Still, the researchers now advise young men to avoid prolonged laptop use until future studies are performed. Using a laptop on a desk or on the lap with some form of thermal protection is advised.
Results will be published in the February 2005 issue of the European journal
