Children susceptible to Wi-fi radiation
Spain Created: 29 Jan 2015
A CONTROVERSIAL study has called for parents to try and limit their offsprings’ exposure to Wi-fi over fears it could harm their health.

The report, published in the Journal of Microscopy and Ultra-structure, claims children absorb more radiation from a source than adults.

It warns foetuses are the most vulnerable of all, and researchers say mothers should not carry mobile phones in their clothing. A paediatric neurologist said that pregnant women deserve to know that wireless radiation can have an impact on the developing brain: “We’re seeing alarming increases in the number of children diagnosed with neuro-logical disorders over the past decade, and anything we can do that might help reduce that rate should be taken very seriously.”

Wi-fi signals use low intensity radio waves, similar in wavelength to domestic microwave radiation. The type of radiation emitted by radio waves (Wi-fi), visible light, microwaves and mobile phones has been shown to raise the temperature of tissue at very high levels of exposure and researchers are divided as to whether this daily radiation can cause damage.

The Parliament of Navarra urged to remove the WIFI in schools as a precaution (Google translation)
Spain Created: 3 Nov 2014
The Parliament of Navarra urged to remove the WIFI in schools as a precaution

The Parliament of Navarre: Advocates apply the precautionary principle in relation to exposure limits to electromagnetic fields whose boundaries have become "obsolete".

The Committee on Rural Development, Environment and Local Government today approved with votes in favor of Socialists of Navarra, BILDU, Aralar-NaBai, PPN and Left-Ezkerra UPN and abstention, a resolution by the Parliament of Navarra "adheres to Resolution 1815 of May 27, 2011, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe", which argues for applying the precautionary principle with regard to the limits of exposure to electromagnetic fields, even more when scientific evaluation does not allow determining risk with sufficient certainty.

The adopted resolution includes a second point at which, in turn, calls the Provincial Executive to "implement the recommendations of the resolution."

Similarly, and in a third section, the Spanish Government is summoned to "pick up and implement the recommendations of Resolution 1815 in the development of telecommunications legislation." In this section, SN and PPN have joined UPN abstaining. BILDU, Aralar-NaBai Left-Ezkerra have maintained their affirmative vote.

In the preamble, the resolution driven by GP-NaBai Aralar BILDU and alludes to the debate generated around the conditions that produce electromagnetic fields "on the environment and health," and notes that "concern has increased "Due to the proliferation of high emissions (telecommunications infrastructure) and low frequency, the limits," Obsolete (have not been revised since 1999) do not take into account the most vulnerable citizens, for pregnant women, newborns / girls and boys / as ".

In this regard, proponents refer to the advice discharges by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe resolution 1815 of 2011, a document which recommended "review the scientific basis for the standards of exposure to electromagnetic fields" and " set thresholds for levels of preventive long-term exposure in all indoor areas not exceeding 0.6 volts per meter ".

The session, chaired by Begoña Sanzberro (GP UPN), attended by the GP UPN, Jerome Gomez, Antonio Perez Prados, José A. Rapún Javier Lorente, and Jesus Esparza; by GP SN, Carmen Ochoa, Samuel Caro and Pedro Rascon; by GP BILDU Victor Rubio and Barea Bikendi; by GP-NaBai Aralar, Txentxo Jimenez and Xabi Lasa; by GP PPN, Eva Gorri; and the GP IE, Marisa Simon.

The Resolution of the Council of Europe states, inter alia:

- Give preference to children in general and especially in schools and classrooms, systems access internet via cable connection (avoiding wireless WiFi) and strictly regulate the use of mobile students on campus "

- Take "all reasonable steps" to reduce exposure to electromagnetic fields, including radio frequencies emitted by mobile phones, "and particularly the exposure to children and young people, for whom the risk of tumors of the head seems more".

- Establish information campaigns and awareness of the risks of potentially harmful long-term biological effects on the environment and human health, especially "children and young people of reproductive age."

- It is recommended that: "the use of wired telephones in households or, failing that, models which do not permanently emit pulsed waves."

Aircraft navigation and comms can be hijacked via the on-board Wi-Fi, hacker claims
Spain Created: 7 Aug 2014
(Reuters) - Cyber security researcher Ruben Santamarta says he has figured out how to hack the satellite communications equipment on passenger jets through their WiFi and inflight entertainment systems - a claim that, if confirmed, could prompt a review of aircraft security.

Santamarta, a consultant with cyber security firm IOActive, is scheduled to lay out the technical details of his research at this week's Black Hat hacking conference in Las Vegas, an annual convention where thousands of hackers and security experts meet to discuss emerging cyber threats and improve security measures.

His presentation on Thursday on vulnerabilities in satellite communications systems used in aerospace and other industries is expected to be one of the most widely watched at the conference.

"These devices are wide open. The goal of this talk is to help change that situation," Santamarta, 32, told Reuters.

The researcher said he discovered the vulnerabilities by "reverse engineering" - or decoding - highly specialized software known as firmware, used to operate communications equipment made by Cobham Plc, Harris Corp, EchoStar Corp's Hughes Network Systems, Iridium Communications Inc and Japan Radio Co Ltd.

In theory, a hacker could use a plane's onboard WiFi signal or inflight entertainment system to hack into its avionics equipment, potentially disrupting or modifying satellite communications, which could interfere with the aircraft's navigation and safety systems, Santamarta said.

He acknowledged that his hacks have only been tested in controlled environments, such as IOActive's Madrid laboratory, and they might be difficult to replicate in the real world. Santamarta said he decided to go public to encourage manufacturers to fix what he saw as risky security flaws.

Representatives for Cobham, Harris, Hughes and Iridium said they had reviewed Santamarta's research and confirmed some of his findings, but downplayed the risks.

For instance, Cobham, whose Aviation 700 aircraft satellite communications equipment was the focus of Santamarta's research, said it is not possible for hackers to use WiFi signals to interfere with critical systems that rely on satellite communications for navigation and safety. The hackers must have physical access to Cobham's equipment, according to Cobham spokesman Greg Caires.

"In the aviation and maritime markets we serve, there are strict requirements restricting such access to authorized personnel only," said Caires.

A Japan Radio Co spokesman declined to comment, saying information on such vulnerabilities was not public.

BUGGY 'FIRMWARE'

Black Hat, which was founded in 1997, has often been a venue for hackers to present breakthrough research. In 2009, Charlie Miller and Collin Mulliner demonstrated a method for attacking iPhones with malicious text messages, prompting Apple Inc to release a patch.

In 2011, Jay Radcliffe demonstrated methods for attacking Medtronic Inc's insulin pumps, which helped prompt an industry review of security.

Santamarta published a 25-page research report in April that detailed what he said were multiple bugs in firmware used in satellite communications equipment made by Cobham, Harris, Hughes, Iridium and Japan Radio Co for a wide variety of industries, including aerospace, military, maritime transportation, energy and communications.

The report laid out scenarios by which hackers could launch attacks, though it did not provide the level of technical details that Santamarta said he will disclose at Black Hat.

Harris spokesman Jim Burke said the company had reviewed Santamarta's paper. "We concluded that the risk of compromise is very small," he said.

Iridium spokesman Diane Hockenberry said, "We have determined that the risk to Iridium subscribers is minimal, but we are taking precautionary measures to safeguard our users."

One vulnerability that Santamarta said he found in equipment from all five manufacturers was the use of "hardcoded" log-in credentials, which are designed to let service technicians access any piece of equipment with the same login and password.

The problem is that hackers can retrieve those passwords by hacking into the firmware, then use the credentials to access sensitive systems, Santamarta said.

Hughes spokeswoman Judy Blake said hardcoded credentials were "a necessary" feature for customer service. The worst a hacker could do is to disable the communication link, she said.

Santamarta said he will respond to the comments from manufacturers during his presentation, then take questions during an open Q&A session after his talk.

Vincenzo Iozzo, a member of Black Hat's review board, said Santamarta's paper marked the first time a researcher had identified potentially devastating vulnerabilities in satellite communications equipment.

"I am not sure we can actually launch an attack from the passenger inflight entertainment system into the cockpit," he said. "The core point is the type of vulnerabilities he discovered are pretty scary just because they involve very basic security things that vendors should already be aware of."

Neuroscientist Exposes Dangers of Electromagnetic Fields
Spain Created: 16 Apr 2014
Neuroscience has come under scrutiny for its involvement in an array of mind control initiatives and other ethically questionable research. But at least one neuroscientist from Sweden has gone on record to caution against the increasing dangers of Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) on human beings and other living organisms, as you will see in the presentation below.

Our modern world is creating an electromagnetic soup filled with electrical pulses, radio frequencies, computer screens, wireless signals, as well as personal devices such as cell phones and gadgets that are emitting damaging radiation. There are many peer-reviewed scientific studies which are drawing conclusions that should concern us all, but particularly young children and pregnant women. In fact, the debate is heating up to such a level that government agencies are even infighting over the matter, as evidenced when the Department of the Interior recently sent a letter with their own scientific papers chastising the FCC for using standards that are 30 years out of date. As the DOI stated, the concern is not only in the negative health effects upon people, but upon wildlife as well.

Please listen to Professor Olle Johansson, PhD as he offers a comprehensive view of the many issues surrounding EMFs, including an industry-wide attempt by telecom to cover up the negative consequences. His information is echoed by the recent reversal of a ruling in Maine which had everything to do with industry pressure and influence. Professor Johansson also addresses what we can do to protect ourselves and our environment from the impact of EMFs.

Dr. Johansson is Associate Professor in the Neuroscience department of the world-renowned Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. This presentation was filmed at a technical seminar on the Environment and Health in Barcelona, Spain. It is a key presentation, as he is speaking to medical practitioners, not only to a lay audience. Nevertheless, it's a very straightforward and easily understood lecture.

Particularly troubling is his opening sequence which recounts the long history of known negative health effects.

He also asserts that all people are hypersensitive to EMFs and are being radiated in the classical way that we would think of as related to major events such as Fukushima. The health effects are long term - including DNA fragmentation - and also must be addressed as a cumulative threat.

At the very least, Professor Johansson asserts, EMFs very easily can be linked to a growing number of allergies, and he urges us to re-evaluate the rise in allergic conditions in tandem with the rise in the use of electronic devices.

Please share this information and help your friends and family make better informed decisions in a world of increased connectivity. Professor Johansson is no Luddite, but a concerned scientist who would like to see a full open debate based on the very troubling scientific health studies he cites.

This video can help to start a debate in your local community and government, before the lowest standards possible continue to be applied to human health and the environment. If you find yourself grappling with the apathy of others, I'd like to leave you with a quote:

When I die, I want the last thought to be I did my best; not I could have done better. - Professor Olle Johansson

Spanish gather to raise awareness on Rare diseases!
Spain Created: 2 Mar 2014
Today, as global day of rare diseases, the association of people affected by electrosensitivity is trying to raise awareness about this problem.
Today, global day of rare diseases, there has been a concentration on Pinto with the aim of raising awareness of electrosensitivity.
The association affected by electrosensitivity (FRAVM), whose vice president is the son of the first woman who committed suicide in Spain for the suffering caused by this disease, has been informing the public about the problems in our health causing the waves produced by mobile phones, wifi and other electromagnetic waves to which we are exposed.

They have called on the authorities legislation guaranteeing the safety of people on the benefits of telecommunications companies. And also require recognition of the responsibility of public authorities by people who have become ill due to this cause.

Subjective symptoms related to GSM radiation from mobile phone base stations: a cross-sectional study
Spain Created: 4 Jan 2014
Abstract:
We performed a re-analysis of the data from Navarro et al (2003) in which health symptoms related to microwave exposure from mobile phone base stations (BSs) were explored, including data obtained in a retrospective inquiry about fear of exposure from BSs.

Design:
Cross-sectional study.

Setting La Ñora (Murcia), Spain.

Participants:
Participants with known illness in 2003 were subsequently disregarded: 88 participants instead of 101 (in 2003) were analysed. Since weather circumstances can influence exposure, we restricted data to measurements made under similar weather conditions.

Outcomes and methods:
A statistical method indifferent to the assumption of normality was employed: namely, binary logistic regression for modelling a binary response (eg, suffering fatigue (1) or not (0)), and so exposure was introduced as a predictor variable. This analysis was carried out on a regular basis and bootstrapping (95% percentile method) was used to provide more accurate CIs.

Results:
The symptoms most related to exposure were lack of appetite (OR=1.58, 95% CI 1.23 to 2.03); lack of concentration (OR=1.54, 95% CI 1.25 to 1.89); irritability (OR=1.51, 95% CI 1.23 to 1.85); and trouble sleeping (OR=1.49, 95% CI 1.20 to 1.84). Changes in –2 log likelihood showed similar results. Concerns about the BSs were strongly related with trouble sleeping (OR =3.12, 95% CI 1.10 to 8.86). The exposure variable remained statistically significant in the multivariate analysis. The bootstrapped values were similar to asymptotic CIs.

Conclusions:
This study confirms our preliminary results. We observed that the incidence of most of the symptoms was related to exposure levels—independently of the demographic variables and some possible risk factors. Concerns about adverse effects from exposure, despite being strongly related with sleep disturbances, do not influence the direct association between exposure and sleep.

Mayor meets with Swedish expert on health effects of electromagnetic pollution, Olle Johansson
Spain Created: 27 Nov 2013
Translation from Catalan: The mayor, Juan Mora, received this morning at City Hall Dr Olle Johansson, associate professor and director of the Experimental Dermatology Unit at the Karolinska Institute (Stockholm, Sweden) and an expert on effects of electromagnetic fields on health of people.

Olle Johansson participated last weekend in a Technical Conference on Environment and Health held in Barcelona. The session was organized by APQUIRA (Association of People Affected by Chemical and Radiation Environmental), with the collaboration of Environmental Oikos. Responsible for these two organizations also attended this morning's meeting with the mayor.

The current increase of electromagnetic radiation in the cities, triggered by wireless communications, mobile and wireless, have led to studies on the possible effects on human health. According to the Swedish expert, studies show that electromagnetic waves have effects on the cells that make up living things, beyond the thermal effects foreseen by current regulations. For this reason, he believes that the levels permitted by current regulations should be reduced.

Mataró City Council has undertaken several initiatives in recent years to increase control over the sources of generation of electromagnetic fields. Launched a pioneering ordinance to regulate the installation and operation of facilities and radio in January, with the transfer of new equipment by the Government, extended network control radiation antennas Mobile and other electromagnetic fields.

Within this network, the City has two laptops with which measurements can be classified as sensitive sites (centers for the elderly, primary care centers, schools, public places, etc..) And demand for private homes to neighbors.

Original text in Catalan:

FRYING TONIGHT
Spain Created: 17 Nov 2013
As advances in technology races ahead of us, little consideration may be given to potential hidden dangers, but this week, the councillor for the environment for the municipality of Orihuela, Manuel Gallud, revealed some startling statistics of one such danger, as well as detailing the intentions of his government team to deal with the shocking state of mobile phone mast generated radiation present in the municipality.

The councillor has announced that the government intend to develop an ordinance to regulate the installation of mobile phone masts, which will have three clear objectives. Firstly, the intention will be to remove all unlicensed antennas and transmitter sites. Secondly to curb the installation of new masts and thirdly to advice community owners who have such installations on buildings not to renew the rental of rooftops and similar building structures.

The notion came about when a group of residents, the Plataforma Vecinal contra las Antenas de Telefonía Móvil de Orihuela, raised the issue with the environment department, because of their concerns over the number of cases of cancers, Alzheimer's and autism in the area of calle Reyes Católicos .

“We are frying in radiation”, Gallud said whilst presenting the data, stating that the maximum recommended levels of radiation listed by the international health association is 30 microwatts per square meter, whereas in Orihuela 2,000 microwatts were recorded, as an example of the seriousness of the situation.

Despite the platform providing their own data to the council, in order to ensure the accurate and unbiased data, the town hall enlisted an approved private company to carry out measurements across the area, which has itself resulted in the conclusion that “the influence of radiation on health is high, and can cause stress and insomnia”, continued Gallud, whereas José Caselles, spokesperson for the platform , said that “there are terrible and disturbing levels of radiation that affect people , especially children , the elderly and sick”, which he considers “violates the fundamental rights such as health, the environment or decent housing”, which must take preference over any economic criteria.

Caselles still believes their data to be “concrete”, with records from across the municipality revealing 1,300 microwatts of radiation in the vicinity of the centro salud de La Regia, 1,800 microwatts on calle del Río, 1,400 in the plaza de Capuchinos, 1,600 at the IES Gabriel Miró, over 5,000 in the Palacio del Agua, and a staggering 6,600 in the pedanía de Desamparados, bearing in mind that Gallud had already said that 30 microwatts per square meter is the maximum permitted.

Whereas our commitment to mobile phones may leave us reluctant to suffer the consequences of the loss of use, the group believes that it is possible to combine technology with reduced health risk, “since installing the antennas away from the population centres can have good coverage without subjecting the population to these levels of radiation”.

A recent health report stated that “The human body itself is electromagnetic (at a very low level—around 10 hertz). It’s been shown that each one of our cells has its own electromagnetic field (EMF). Maintaining balance in those cellular EMFs is critical to staying healthy.”

Although there has been a lot of speculation from both sides of the argument both supporting and denouncing mobile phone masts, decades of studies have demonstrated that artificial frequencies higher than 10 hertz can create stress and serious health problems.

Mobile phone masts emit at significantly higher frequency than even radio waves. These higher energy waves can actually destroy chemical and molecular bonds, creating chaos in our basic biochemical structures. The negative health effects of EMFs and microwave radiation are well documented with studies revealing how EMFs can affect metabolism, genes, hormones and more, with mobile phone radiation being linked to headaches, memory loss, low sperm count, birth defects and even cancer, heart conditions and Alzheimer’s, but the damage is cumulative in the tissues, and can take years, even decades to show up.

In the UK, the Health Protection Agency also believe there to be little risk from mobile phone masts, but, more importantly, admit that more information and tests are needed “There are thousands of published scientific papers covering research about the effects of various types of radio waves on cells, tissues, animals and people. The scientific consensus is that, apart from the increased risk of a road accident due to mobile phone use when driving, there is no clear evidence of adverse health effects from the use of mobile phones or from phone masts. However there is now widespread use of this relatively new technology and more research is needed in case there are long term effects.”
