Protest over cell tower in South Trinidad
Trinidad Created: 4 Jun 2007
OVER 75 residents of Alana Street, Gasparillo engaged in a Sunday morning placard demonstration over the impending construction of a cellular tower within their community. Braving wet, cold conditions the residents led by Gasparillo/Bonne Aventure councillor Feeraz Ali, stated that no permission was secured for the construction of the tower by the Couva/Tabaquite/Talparo Regional Corporation (CTTRC).

Ali said the cellular provider also failed to consult villagers on the tower’s construction and had only visited two families in the district. When Newsday visited the area residents were busy using gravel intended for use on the site to fill the potholed roadway.

Resident Marcia Farrow said the health of the community would be affected by the radio waves generated by the tower. Tabaquite MP Adesh Nanan has promised to take up the matter with Public Utilities Minister Pennelope Beckles sometime this week.
