Increasing incidence of thyroid cancer in the Nordic countries

During use of the handheld wireless phone, especially the smartphone, the thyroid gland is a target organ. During the 21st century, the incidence of thyroid cancer is increasing in many countries. We used the Swedish Cancer Register to study trends from 1970 to 2017:

During that time period, the incidence increased statistically significantly in women The increase was especially pronounced during 2010–2017. Increasing incidence was found also in men. Similar results were found for all Nordic countries based on NORDCAN.

These results are in agreement with recent results on increased thyroid cancer risk associated with the use of mobile phones. We postulate that RF radiation is a causative factor for the increasing thyroid cancer incidence.

Appeals that matter or not on a moratorium on the deployment of the fifth generation, 5G, for microwave radiation

In an appeal sent to the EU in September, 2017 currently >260 scientists and medical doctors requested for a moratorium on the deployment of 5G until the health risks associated with this new technology have been fully investigated by industry‑independent scientists. The appeal and four rebuttals to the EU over a period of >2 years, have not achieved any positive response from the EU to date. Unfortunately, decision makers seem to be uninformed or even misinformed about the risks. EU officials rely on the opinions of individuals within the ICNIRP and the Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks (SCENIHR), most of whom have ties to the industry……In this article, the warnings on the health risks associated with RF presented in the 5G appeal and the letters to the EU Health Commissioner since September, 2017 and the authors’ rebuttals are summarized. The responses from the EU seem to have thus far prioritized industry profits to the detriment of human health and the environment.

Telecom Ericsson will pay over $1 billion to settle US corruption charges

Tech companies have been caught in corruption scandals before, but seldom on this scale. Telecom giant Ericsson has settled with the US Justice Department and SEC for just under $1.1 billion over charges of extensive corruption in several countries, including China, Saudi Arabia and Vietnam. The company had been accused of violating the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act between 2000 and 2016 by bribing officials to land customers, falsifying its records and failing to use "reasonable" accounting controls. The SEC, meanwhile, charged Ericsson with bribery that took place between 2011 and 2017.

The settlement leaves Ericsson largely free of criminal convictions that could have led to sanctions and other stiff penalties, although its Egyptian branch pleaded guilty to violating the FCPA. It's paying about $520.6 million to the DOJ, while the remaining $539.9 million goes to the SEC. For contrast, companies like HP have paid 'just' tens of millions to settle smaller bribery charges.

Ericsson chief Borje Ekholm (who took the role in January 2017) told the media that he considered the corruption "completely unacceptable," pointing out that some of those involved were executives. The company also said it had taken steps to improve both its ethics and its monitoring.

The deal likely won't make everyone happy. Ericsson's behavior went on for the better part of two decades, but the company will largely be off the hook -- the company said it could handle the settlement with "available funds." Still, the payout is significant enough that it might give other tech firms pause if their anti-corruption policies are lax.

ICNIRP draft on new radiofrequency guidelines is flawed

At a meeting in Paris on 17 April 2019 Eric van Rongen, the present ICNIRP chairman presented a draft on new ICNIRP guidelines for radiofrequency radiation (RFR) exposure. The presentation is freely available at the web although labeled as a ’draft – do not cite or quote’.

Most remarkable is that the science on health effects is still based on thermal (heating) effect from RFR just as the evaluations published 1998 and updated in 2009.

In the draft only thermal effects are considered for health effects (page 7). Van Rongen states there is ’No evidence that RF-EMF causes such diseases as cancer’ (page 8).

These comments are based on the power point presentation. However, there is no evidence that non-thermal effects are considered and thus a large majority of scientific evidence on human health effects, not to mention hazards to the environment. Thus the basis for new guidelines is flawed and the whole presentation should be dismissed as scientifically flawed.

If this draft represents the final version on ICNIRP guidelines it is time to close down ICNIRP since their evaluation is not based on science but on selective data such as only thermal effects from RFR, see also

The draft represents a worst-case scenario for public health and represents wishful thinking.

Birds Can See Earth's Magnetic Fields, And We Finally Know How That's Possible

The mystery behind how birds navigate might finally be solved: it's not the iron in their beaks providing a magnetic compass, but a newly discovered protein in their eyes that lets them "see" Earth's magnetic fields.

These findings come courtesy of two new papers - one studying robins, the other zebra finches.

The fancy eye protein is called Cry4, and it's part of a class of proteins called cryptochromes - photoreceptors sensitive to blue light, found in both plants and animals. These proteins play a role in regulating circadian rhythms.

There's also been evidence in recent years that, in birds, the cryptochromes in their eyes are responsible for their ability to orient themselves by detecting magnetic fields, a sense called magnetoreception.

We know that birds can only sense magnetic fields if certain wavelengths of light are available - specifically, studies have shown that avian magnetoreception seems dependent on blue light.

This seems to confirm that the mechanism is a visual one, based in the cryptochromes, which may be able to detect the fields because of quantum coherence.

To find more clues on these cryptochromes, two teams of biologists set to work. Researchers from Lund University in Sweden studied zebra finches, and researchers from the Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg in Germany studied European robins.

The Lund team measured gene expression of three cryptochromes, Cry1, Cry2 and Cry4, in the brains, muscles and eyes of zebra finches. Their hypothesis was that the cryptochromes associated with magnetoreception should maintain constant reception over the circadian day.

They found that, as expected for circadian clock genes, Cry1 and Cry2 fluctuated daily - but Cry4 expressed at constant levels, making it the most likely candidate for magnetoreception.

This finding was supported by the robin study, which found the same thing.

"We also found that Cry1a, Cry1b, and Cry2 mRNA display robust circadian oscillation patterns, whereas Cry4 shows only a weak circadian oscillation," the researchers wrote.

But they made a couple of other interesting findings, too. The first is that Cry4 is clustered in a region of the retina that receives a lot of light - which makes sense for light-dependent magnetoreception.

The other is that European robins have increased Cry4 expression during the migratory season, compared to non-migratory chickens.

Both sets of researchers caution that more research is needed before Cry4 can be declared the protein responsible for magnetoreception.

The evidence is strong, but it's not definitive, and both Cry1 and Cry2 have also been implicated in magnetoreception, the former in garden warblers and the latter in fruit flies.

Observing birds with non-functioning Cry4 could help confirm the role it seems to play, while other studies will be needed to figure Cry1's role.

So what does a bird actually see? Well, we can't ever know what the world looks like through another species' eyes, but we can take a very strong guess.

According to researchers at the Theoretical and Computational Biophysics group at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, whose researcher Klaus Schulten first predicted magnetoreceptive cryptochromes in 1978, they could provide a magnetic field "filter" over the bird's field of view - like in the picture above (click source link below to see image).

The zebra finch study was published in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface, and the robin study was published in Current Biology.

På grund av den rådande situation avseende bland annat utbyggnaden av trådlös teknik i samhället, lanserar vi nu en rad kampanjer för att öka trycket på våra folkvalda och för att informera allmänheten.

Var med på manifestation med oss i Stockholm den 14 april !

Syftet med manifestationen är att belysa den ohållbara situationen där små barn dagligen exponeras för skadlig mikrovågsstrålning och där 5G står inför utrullning på bred front utan någon som helst föregående riskanalys. Blir detta dödsstöten för folkhälsan och miljön?

Flera talare kommer att finnas på plats (Mona Nilsson, Gunilla Ladberg, m. fl.). OBS Vill du också säga några ord? Varmt välkommen att inkomma med ett kort manus till oss (max 3 minuter) senast 31 mars.

Sprid till så många som möjligt! Alla som kan uppmuntras att deltaga. Fråga vänner, anhöriga och andra som bryr sig om och är oroade över spridningen av trådlös teknik bland barn och andra känsliga individer.

ICNIRP members authored grossly misleading Govt. report on EMF health effects

In 2017 the Public Health Agency of Sweden (Folkhälsomyndigheten) published a report on environmental health issues (Miljöhälsorapport 2017) that included a section on EMF health risks authored by Anders Ahlbom (AA) and Maria Feychting (MF), both professors at the Karolinska Institute. The report from Anders Ahlbom and Maria Feychting is grossly misleading about the available scientific evidence.

Members of ICNIRP

Anders Ahlbom and Maria Feychting dominated all expert evaluations on health risks from low frequency electromagnetic fields and radiofrequency radiation from wireless technology for a decade in Sweden (2003-2011). Furthermore they have been or are still experts to the WHO (MF 2015-2018), the EU (AA 2007, 2009), UK (MF), Norway (MF). They are both also partly responsible for the standards (or reference values) that most countries apply for limiting exposure to electromagnetic fields ICNIRP (AA 1996-2008), MF (2008-now). In all their statements and reports health effects below their own recommended standards from ICNIRP have been dismissed. In 2008 the Karolinska Institutes ethical board draw the conclusion that Anders Ahlboms membership in ICNIRP might be considered as a conflict of interest and therefore should be declared whenever he made any statements related to the issue of health effetcts from electromagnetic fields.
Ties to telecommunications industry

Both receive funding from the telecommunications industry for research. Their statements and reports have consistently during the last 15 years been biased in favour of the telecommunications, IT, and electricity industry’s interest.

Furthermore Anders Ahlbom’s brother, Gunnar Ahlbom, was for a long time a lobbyist for Swedish telecom giant Telia (previously TeliaSonera) in Brussels. At the same time Anders Ahlbom served as an ”independent expert” on several important expert panels, in Sweden as well as at the WHO and EU. At a meeting organized by the European Commission in cooperation with GSM Association and Mobile Manufacturers Forum in Brussels in 2004, Anders Ahlbom was an invited expert to speak on health effects, while his brother Gunnar Ahlbom sat in the audience representing TeliaSonera. Later the same year Gunnar Ahlbom appeared at another meeting as vice chair, EU Affairs, TeliaSonera. In 2011 Anders Ahlbom was not accepted as expert for the evaluation of cancer risks from radiofrequency radiation at the IARC, due to his ties to Gunnar Ahlbom AB a consultant firm.
Biased point of departure

In 2012 Anders Ahlbom declared that his ”starting point” is that there is no reason to beleive that there are any health effects from electromagnetic fields below current standards recommended by ICNIRP (i e by himself). Such a biased point of departure clearly undermines his ability to make an objective review of the accumultating evidence that counters his predetermined opinion. See video
236 scientists don’t agree

By 2018, 236 independent scientists have signed the EMF Scientists appeal asking for a review of the outdated ICNIRP standards that are insufficient to protect human health. Their conclusion is in sharp contrast to the report by Anders Ahlbom an Maria Feychting:

”Numerous recent scientific publications have shown that EMF affects living organisms at levels well below most international and national guidelines. Effects include increased cancer risk, cellular stress, increase in harmful free radicals, genetic damages, structural and functional changes of the reproductive system, learning and memory deficits, neurological disorders, and negative impacts on general well-being in humans. Damage goes well beyond the human race, as there is growing evidence of harmful effects to both plant and animal life…… ICNIRP continues to the present day to make these assertions, in spite of growing scientific evidence to the contrary. It is our opinion that, because the ICNIRP guidelines do not cover long-term exposure and low-intensity effects, they are insufficient to protect public health”

Below are translations of some very misleading statements made by Anders Ahlbom and Maria Feychting in the Swedish Environmental Health Report 2017.
Low frequency electromagnetic fields

”There is an extensive theoretical and experimental amount of research that has been ongoing in parallel with epidemiological research, but still it has not been possible to identify any biological mechanism that can explain how weak magnetic fields could explain the occurrence of leukemia or any other disease.” ….

….For adults, mainly in the 1980s and 1990s, a large number of diseases were studied in relation to exposure to power frequency magnetic fields. This research includes a number of cancer diseases, several neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer, Parkinson and ALS. Cardiovascular diseases, certain psychiatric illnesses and pregnancy outcomes have also been studied. The research in these areas was originally contradictory, and some studies indicated that there would be a relation to magnetic field exposure, but research has increasingly unequivocally concluded that it is not possible to show any relation between magnetic field exposure and risks for disease. ” (pp 201-202)

”extensive experimental and theoretical research could not find support for this risk”. (for cancer, for childhood leukemia) (p 202)

”Although there is no known mechanism of action for health effects at such low exposure levels (ie under current ICNIRP reference values ​​/ guidelines) extensive experimental and epidemiological research has been conducted, but no health risks have been detected” (page 203)
Radiofrequency fields

”For the general population, the own mobile phone is the most important source of exposure. When the mobile phone transmits at maximum power, the exposure level is close to the reference values ​​recommended by ICNIRP, while the fields from base stations are at least 1,000 times lower. ” ….

….”There are a significant number of studies on mobile phone usage and the risk of brain tumor. With a few exceptions, the results have not shown any increased risk for brain tumor associated with mobile phone usage. ”…..

…..”In it (the study of brain tumor risks for children using mobile phones), there was no increased risk of brain tumors found among children and young people who used mobile phones.” (page 203)

”There are several epidemiological studies of cancer and radiofrequency exposure from radio and television transmitters and base stations for mobile telephony and they show no connection between exposure and cancer.” (p 204)

On page 204, Anders Ahlbom and Maria Feychting argue that the incidence of brain tumors in the brain tumor statistics has been stable since the introduction of mobile phones and that this would indicate that the mobile phone does not increase the risk.
Symptoms and electrohypersensitivity:

”There are no scientific data confirming that exposure to electromagnetic fields causes or contributes to these symptoms” (page 202)

”There is no scientific evidence that support that electromagnetic fields, such as radiofrequency fields associated with mobile telephony or wireless networks, cause the symptoms described by people who perceive themselves as being electrohypersensitive” (page 205).

On page 205: ”There is no scientific support for health risks from exposure to radiofrequency fields below current reference values. Of course, it cannot be ruled out that longer exposure times, special usage patterns or any specific technique would be associated with health risks or there may be risks in relation to non-studied diseases, but there is no scientific reason to suspect this.”


This latest report from professor Anders Ahlbom and Maria Feychting is a clearly false evaluation of the available scientific littterature. It is yet another striking example that Anders Ahlbom and Maria Feychting from the Karolinska Institute are not capable of making an objective and honest risk assessment of health risks from electromagnetic fields. The very biased report might be a result of their long standing ties to the industry that benefits from their dismissal of health risks from electromagnetic fields.

Cancers in the head and neck are increasing in Sweden

Cancers in the head and the neck are increasing in Sweden according to the latest cancer incidence data from the Swedish Cancer Registry. Cancers in the thyroid and the mouth are among the cancers that have seen the sharpest rise during the last decade but also the trend for cancers of the pituitary are on the rise. Among men aged 50 -79 years malignant brain tumours, grade 3-4 are also increasing visibly. The increase of these cancers has coincided with increasing use of mobile phones during the same time period while the increasing trend of malignant brain tumours, gliomas, might be an effect of long term use of mobile phones.
Thyroid cancer

The diagram below shows the standardised incidence of thyroid cancers in Sweden 1970-2016. Women are more hit by this cancer than men. The increase among women since 2008 is over 150%. The thyroid is more exposed to mobile phone radiation since the introduction of the so called ”smart phones”, that have antennas also at the bottom of the phone.

Mörkläggning av mobilstrålningens konsekvenser – Hur myndigheten missinformerar om den massiva elektrosmog och de skador på hälsan den medför (2017).

I en nyligen publicerad bok av den danska psykologen Eva Theilgaard Jacobsen belyses framväxten av det digitala samhället med ökad exponering för radiofrekventa (RF) fält. Boken ger en intressant historisk tillbakablick med diskussion av hälsoeffekter och de många intressekonflikter som finns. Vissa nyckelspelare som förnekar några som helst hälsorisker beskrivs, även ur ett historiskt perspektiv. Återigen framställs WHOs brist på ett hälsoperspektiv i sitt handlande när det gäller RF strålning. Industrins vinstintresse förefaller vara viktigare än folkhälsan.

Boken kan rekommenderas till den som vill förstå spelet bakom kulisserna. Även om boken har ett danskt perspektiv tar den upp mycket av internationell betydelse. Den finns i handeln:

Increasing brain tumor rates in Sweden

Recently we published a new article on brain tumor rates in Sweden using the Inpatient Register for the time period 1998-2015. Also incidence data using the Swedish Cancer Register were analyzed for the same time period. The full article can be found here, see also abstract below.

We used the Swedish Inpatient Register (IPR) to analyze rates of brain tumors of unknown type (D43) during 1998-2015. Average Annual Percentage Change (AAPC) per 100,000 increased with +2.06%, 95% confidence interval (CI) +1.27, +2.86% in both genders combined.

A joinpoint was found in 2007 with Annual Percentage Change (APC) 1998-2007 of +0.16%, 95% CI -0.94, +1.28%, and 2007-2015 of +4.24%, 95% CI +2.87, +5.63%.

Highest AAPC was found in the age group 20-39 years. In the Swedish Cancer Register the age-standardized incidence rate per 100,000 increased for brain tumors, ICD-code 193.0, during 1998-2015 with AAPC in men +0.49%, 95% CI +0.05, +0.94%, and in women +0.33%, 95% CI -0.29, +0.45%.

The cases with brain tumor of unknown type lack morphological examination. Brain tumor diagnosis was based on cytology/histopathology in 83% for men and in 87% for women in 1980 in the Cancer Register. This frequency increased to 90% in men and 88% in women in 2015.

During the same time period CT and MRI imaging techniques were introduced and morphology is not always necessary for diagnosis. If all brain tumors based on clinical diagnosis with CT or MRI had been reported to the Cancer Register the frequency of diagnoses based on cytology/histology would have decreased in the register. The results indicate underreporting of brain tumor cases to the Cancer Register. The real incidence would be higher. Thus, incidence trends based on the Cancer Register should be used with caution. Use of wireless phones should be considered in relation to the change of incidence rates.
